  1. 1. Studies on Cytotoxic and Neutrophil Challenging Polypeptides and Cardiac Glycosides of Plant Origin

    Author : Senia Johansson; Tore Mellstrand; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical chemistry; cytotoxic; neutrophil; polypeptides; Phoradendron tomentosum; Digitalis purpurea; plant; mistletoe; MS MS; Edman degradation; breast cancer; macrocyclic peptides; multidrug resistance protein; primary structures; phoratoxin; isolation; digitoxin; cardiac lycoside; structure-activity; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmacognosy; farmakognosi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the isolation and characterisation (biological and chemical) of polypeptides from plants. A fractionation protocol was developed and applied on 100 plant materials with the aim of isolating highly purified polypeptide fractions from small amounts of plant materials. READ MORE

  2. 2. Snake Gourds, Parasites and Mother Roasting : Medicinal plants, plant repellents, and Trichosanthes (Cucurbitaceae) in Lao PDR

    Author : Hugo J. de Boer; Lars Björk; Mats Thulin; Thomas Jaenson; Victoria Reyes-Garcia; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Trichosanthes; Ethnobotany; Similarity of Knowledge; Biogeography; Molecular Dating; Brou; Saek; Kry; Mother roasting; Postpartum healthcare; Parturition; Childbirth; Traditional Medicine; Plant repellents; Fermented fish; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik; Biology with specialization in Systematics;

    Abstract : Background. Traditional plant use was studied in Lao PDR. Research focused on medicinal plant use by the Brou, Saek and Kry ethnic groups, traditional plant repellents against parasitic arthropods and leeches, and the phylogeny and biogeography of the medicinally-important snake gourd genus (Trichosanthes, Cucurbitaceae).  Methods. 3. 3. Markets, mixtures and molecular methods : Investigating medicinal plant and edible orchid diversity in Tanzania and Zambia

    Author : Sarina Veldman; Hugo J. de Boer; Tinde R. van Andel; Barbara Gravendeel; Joseph N. Otieno; Julie Hawkins; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA barcoding; Africa; Species delimitation; Orchids; Medicinal plants;

    Abstract : Medicinal plants are an important source of primary healthcare for many people in Tanzania. These medicinal plants are harvested from the wild, and increasing commercial trade poses a serious threat to local plant populations. Currently it is unknown which species are traded and in what amounts. READ MORE

  4. 4. Macrocyclic polypeptides from plants

    Author : Ulf Göransson; David Craik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to explore the structural and functional diversity of polypeptides that are found in plants. Expanding knowledge of simililarities between plant use of these compound and animal use promises exceptional opportunities for finding, from plant research, new structures with biomedical and biotechnological potential.
