  1. 1. Mental Stress and Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation

    Author : Kristina Johansson; Sverker Jern; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Mental stress; endothelium; adrenoceptor blockade; catecholamine; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : The endothelium plays an important part in blood flow regulation by producing the vasodilatory substance nitric oxide (NO). Various studies have shown that commonly accepted risk factors for coronary heart disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, smoking and mental stress impair endothelium-derived vasodilation by the NO-pathway. 2. 2. Cognitive strategies in simple addition and subtraction : Process models based on analyses of response latencies and retrospective verbal reports

    Author : Maj-Lene Hedenborg; Stellan Ohlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; cognition; mental arithmetic; addition; subtraction; process models; response latencies; verbal reports; errors; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to explore cognitive processes used by children and adults when solving simple arithmetic problems, and to develop process models for describing these processes. The studies in the thesis were based mainly on analyses of response latencies and retrospective verbal reports, separately and in combination. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cardiovascular risk factors and endothelium-dependent vasodilation

    Author : Mahziar D. Sarabi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Endothelium; aging; metabolic factors; smoking; stress; mixed meal; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Internal Medicine; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : The vascular endothelium is a major modulator of vascular structur and function. This thesisincludes clinical studies investigating the associations between cardiovascular risk factors andendothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV) in the human forearm vascular bed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Stress system function in abdominal obesity. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system in middle-aged men

    Author : Thomas Ljung; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Abdominal obesity; stress; HPA axis; cortisol; glucocorticoid receptors; sympathetic nervous system; catecholamines; depression; SSRI;

    Abstract : Background: There is a strong relationship between central (abdominal, visceral) obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and elevated blood pressure. These abnormalities are included in the term Metabolic Syndrome, and indicate an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes type 2. READ MORE
