  1. 1. Experimental Models of the Human Peritoneal Environment: Effects of TGF-beta and Hyaluronan

    Author : Peter Falk; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Adhesion formation; experimental model; cell culture; mesothelial cells; peritoneum; fibrinolytic system; transforming growth factor beta; hyaluronan; proliferation;

    Abstract : BACKGROUND Post surgical adhesion formation is still an unsolved problem and occurs when there is an imbalance between fibrin deposition and fibrin clearing capacity in the abdominal cavity. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-?) is associated with fibrosis and hyaluronan has in several studies been showed to reduce adhesions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Peritoneal fibrinolysis during pneumoperitoneum and laparoscopic surgery

    Author : Maria Bergström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Laparoscopy; Fibrinolysis; Peritoneum; Mesothelial cells; Carbon Dioxide; Helium;

    Abstract : BACKGROUND Laparoscopic surgery is believed to induce less postoperative adhesion formation compared with open procedures, but information regarding biological impact of a laparoscopic approach is limited. MATERIAL & METHODS Peritoneal response to laparoscopic surgery was assessed in human peritoneal tissue in two clinical trials (paper I & V). READ MORE

  3. 3. Mesothelial differentiation, mesothelioma and tumor markers in serous cavities

    Author : Miklós Gulyás; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mesothelium; mesothelioma; differentiation; differential gene expression; proteoglycans; tumor markers; effusion;

    Abstract : Mesothelial cells covering the serous membranes are of mesodermal origin although they acquire several characteristics of epithelial cells. The cytological and histological diagnosis of malignant tumors in serous cavities is sometimes a major challenge: the main diagnostic alternatives are reactive benign mesothelium, mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma. 4. 4. Studies on mesothelial differentiation : prognostic and therapeutic approaches to malignant mesothelioma

    Author : Xiaojuan Sun; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mesothelium; Differentiation; Malignant Mesothelioma; Proteasome; Selenium; Thioredoxin;

    Abstract : Malignant mesothelioma (MM), a tumor with a poor prognosis, causes the death of most patients within a year of diagnosis since various treatments seem to have little effect on its outcome. The biological behavior of MM varies greatly, and this heterogeneity is related to its morphology, which may be epithelioid, sarcomatoid (fibroblastoid) or biphasic, the sarcomatoid phenotype being associated with a shorter survival. 5. 5. Malignant mesothelioma : an experimental study with emphasis on proteoglycans in mesothelial cell growth and differentiation

    Author : Katalin Dobra; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Malignant mesothelioma; differentiation; syndecan; nuclear transport; PG profile.;

    Abstract : Malignant mesothelioma is a highly aggressive tumor with median survival ranging from 4 to 12 months and, despite intense therapeutical efforts, it is invariably fatal. Mesothelioma cells are unique in the sense that they possess a biphasic growth potential and can be stimulated by serum growth factors to differentiate into stable epithelial or fibrous phenotypes.
