1. Speciation and Metabolic rate : Insights from an avian hybrid zone
Abstract : The role of divergent climate adaptation in speciation has received surprisingly little scientific attention. My dissertation research focused on how resting metabolic rate (RMR) relates to the build up of prezygotic and postzygotic isolation in a natural Ficedula flycatcher hybrid zone. READ MORE

2. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. READ MORE

3. Molecular mechanisms in obesity-associated metabolic disease
Abstract : Obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Subjects with obesity are at risk of developing several serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and stroke. READ MORE

4. Metabolic variation in autoimmune diseases
Abstract : The human being and other animals contain immensely complex biochemical processes that govern their function on a cellular level. It is estimated that several thousand small molecules (metabolites) are produced by various biochemical pathways in humans. READ MORE

5. Metabolic Health and Cognitive Function : The Roles of Lifestyle and Shift Work
Abstract : The risk of cognitive impairment and metabolic disturbances increases during aging. Healthy lifestyle habits, such as a regular intake of fatty fish and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDi), have been shown to slow age-related cognitive decline and decrease the risk of metabolic disturbances.
