1. To metal, or not to metal : Diverse mechanisms of O2-activation and radical storage in the ferritin superfamily
Abstract : Proteins in the Ferritin-like superfamily are characterized by a four alpha-helical structural motif. These proteins are distributed across all three kingdoms of life and perform a wide range of functions. READ MORE

2. Structural and physicochemical studies on metal and porphyrin binding by the Bacillus subtilis ferrochelatase
Abstract : The enzyme ferrochelatase (EC 4.99.1.1) is the terminal enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of heme b and catalyzes the insertion of Fe(II) into protoporphyrin IX. READ MORE

3. PARN – The Tail End : Function and mechanisms of specificity and processivity
Abstract : Poly(A)-specific ribonuclease (PARN) is an exoribonuclease that is processive, poly(A) specific and cap-binding. PARN deadenylates the poly(A) tails present on a subset of mRNAs and non-coding RNAs, including among others certain snoRNAs, miRNAs and precursor rRNAs. READ MORE

4. Metal-Organic Complexes at Surfaces
Abstract : The adsorption of different metal-organic complexes at surfaces was investigated by spectroscopic techniques (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy) and by scanning tunnelling microscopy. The investigation methods are able to provide atomic scale information on the studied systems, which moreover originates from the top-most atomic layers in a sample, meaning that they are surface sensitive techniques. 5. Theoretical modeling of metal- and enzyme catalyzed transformations
Abstract : This thesis is focused on describing and predicting catalytic reactions. The major part of the work is based on density functional theory (DFT). In some cases where the size of the investigated system precluded the use of more accurate methods molecular dynamics was employed. READ MORE
