  1. 1. Regulation of cell morphology and adhesion in B lymphocytes by interleukin-4

    Author : Edward Davey; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : B lymphocytes; interleukin-4; lipopolysaccharide; CD40; cell adhesion; cell morphology; cytoskeleton; microvilli;

    Abstract : The different stages in lymphocyte differentiation and activation are associated with profound changes in cell morphology. Under normal development, lymphocytes are at different times in direct contact with stromal cells and extracellular matrix, they transverse endothelium, are transported via blood and lymphatic vessels, home to specific lymphoid organs and may undergo antigen-driven activation events. 2. 2. Regulation of B cell motility and adhesion in health and disease

    Author : Lisa Westerberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : B cells; Migration; Adhesion; WASP; immune deficiency;

    Abstract : Migration and adhesion of lymphocytes are crucial to induce an efficient immune response. These activities rely on cytoskeletal dynamics, mediated by assembly of actin and microtubuli monomers leading to changes in cell shape and signaling. READ MORE

  3. 3. The enterocyte in small intestinal adaption : an experimental and clinicopathological study with special reference to the ultrastructure of the brush border

    Author : Roger Stenling; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Scanning electron microscopy; transmission electron microscopy; stereology;

    Abstract : The small intestine mucosa is known to be able to adapt itself to several kinds of both physiological and pathological conditions. The adaptive patterns of the structure of the enterocytes, particularly their apical surface (brush border), were studied in three models: (1) in rats, subjected to antrectomy or antral exclusion, combined with gastroduodenostomy and gastrojejunostomy; (2) in rats with alloxan diabetes; (3) in children with coeliac disease; a) in its active phase; b) after long-term treatment with gluten-free diets; c) after long-term challenge with dietary gluten following treatment; d) after short-term elimination of dietary gluten. 4. 4. The importance of Foxi1 expression in kidney and inner ear

    Author : Sandra Rodrigo Blomqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Foxi1; intercalated cells; endolymphatic sac; acid base regulation;

    Abstract : The forkhead (FOX) genes comprise a family of transcription factors involved in generegulation in both embryonic and adult tissue. Foxi1 is expressed in the kidney andthe developing inner ear. We examined the significance of Foxi1 in these two organsand explain the molecular mechanisms behind the phenotype seen in Foxi1 deficientmice. READ MORE

  5. 5. Experimental studies of small intestinal permeability and function in uremia

    Author : Martin Magnusson; Anders Alvestrand; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The intestinal permeability has been investigated in experimental chronic and acute uremia in rats. The permeability and the mucosal ability to exclude larger molecules have been measured using differently sized polyethylene glycols (PEG 400 and 1000: mean weights of 400 and 1000 dalton, range 326-1162 dalton).
