1. Middle ear mechanics : using temporal bone experiments to improve clinical methods
Abstract : BackgroundThe middle ear transmits and amplifies sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane via three ossicles to the inner ear. Moreover, it contains two muscles, the stapedius muscle (SM) which protects the inner ear from loud noise, and the tensor tympani (TT) whose function is still debated. READ MORE

2. The linear and nonlinear biomechanics of the middle ear
Abstract : This thesis addresses the biomechanics of the human middle ear, that part of the auditory system which converts sound pressure waves in air to fluid pressure waves in the cochlea. The middle ear's mechanism is analysed in four papers, three main and one supporting; in the main papers the middle ear is treated as a multi-particle, multi-rigid body ensemble possessing a variable number of degrees of freedom depending upon the case being investigated. 3. Multifunctional roles of plasmin in inflammation : Studies of animal models on rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, wound healing and infection
Abstract : Plasmin has been suggested to be involved in degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) and tissue remodeling during a number of physiological and pathological processes. The aims of this thesis were to study the functional roles of plasmin during pathological inflammation in autoimmune and nonautoimmune disease models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS), wound healing and infection. 4. Optical Methods for Tympanic Membrane Characterisation : Towards Objective Otoscopy in Otitis Media
Abstract : Otitis media, which is an upper respiratory tract infection that affect the middle ear, is the second most common disease in childhood, outnumbered in prevalence only by the common cold. Diagnosis of middle ear inflammation is often performed in the primary healthcare where the normal procedure involves anamnesis and physical examination of the tympanic membranes (TM) of the patient, usually be means of otoscopy. 5. Developing otitis media : experimental studies in particular regarding inflammatory changes in the tympanic membrane
Abstract : Otitis media (OM), one of the commonest of childhood diseases, causes much suffering. OM exists in a variety of forms, two of which are acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME). READ MORE
