1. Novel Technologies for Mode-Locking of Solid-State Lasers
Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the investigation of novel technologies for mode-locking of diode-pumped, solid-state lasers. Novel saturable absorbers are used: quantum dots (QDs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which both are low-dimensional nano-formations. In addition, mode-locking by cascaded nonlinearities is explored. 2. High Power, Long Wavelength Semiconductor Disk Lasers for Continuous and Mode-Locked Operation
Abstract : The semiconductor disk laser has recentlyemerged as an attractive alternative to bulky and power consuming gas and solid state lasers. It offers compact, powerful and efficient devices with W level output power and beam properties earlier not achieved with semiconductor lasers. READ MORE

3. Short Pulses in Engineered Nonlinear Media
Abstract : Short optical pulses and engineered nonlinear media is a powerful combination. Mode locked pulses exhibit high peak powers and short pulse duration and the engineered ferro-electric KTiOPO4 facilitates several different nonlinear processes. READ MORE

4. All-fiber modulators for laser applications
Abstract : The objective of this thesis was to explore the usefulness of all-fiber modulators for laser applications. The modulators were all based on refractive index change achieved in the core of the studied fiber- components, exploiting either the elasto-optic effect or the electro-optic effect. READ MORE

5. Time-resolved laser spectroscopic studies of atoms, ions and Molecules
Abstract : Time-resolved laser spectroscopy has been performed to study the radiative properties of various microscopic systems. Using Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) techniques, natural radiative lifetimes have been studied not only in neutral B, S, Ge, Ce, Pb, and in singly ionized V, Fe, Zr, Mo, La, Ce, Eu, Gd and Yb, but also in doubly ionized La, Ce, Pr, Eu, Er, Gd, Tm, Lu, and W.
