1. Monotonicity formulas and applications in free boundary problems
Abstract : This thesis consists of three papers devoted to the study of monotonicity formulas and their applications in elliptic and parabolic free boundary problems. The first paper concerns an inhomogeneous parabolic problem. READ MORE

2. Nonparametric Functional Estimation under Order Restrictions
Abstract : This thesis consists of three papers (Papers A-C) on problems in nonparametric functional estimation, in particular density and regression function estimation and deconvolution, under order assumptions. Pointwise limit distribution results are stated for the obtained estimators, which include isotonic regression estimates, nonparametric maximum likelihood estimates of monotone densities, estimates of convex regression and density functions and deconvolution estimates. 3. A Class of Renewal Processes in Random Environments
Abstract : This paper deals with a generalization of the class of renewal processes with absolutely continuous life length distribution, obtained by allowing a random environment to modulate the stochastic intensity of the renewal process. The random environment is a birth and death process with a finite state space. READ MORE

4. Externally positive systems : Analysis and control based on combinatorial polynomials
Abstract : Monotonic tracking is required in many control systems, including those that cannot tolerate any overshoots and undershoots in their closed-loop responses. Classical examples are found in vehicle cruise control and liquid tank level control. READ MORE

5. Interpolation of Hilbert spaces
Abstract : (i) We prove that intermediate Banach spaces A, B with respect to arbitrary Hilbert couples H, K are exact interpolation iff they are exact K-monotonic, i.e. the condition f0∊A and the inequality K(t,g0;K)≤K(t,f0;H), t>0 imply g0∊B and ||g0||B≤||f0||A (K is Peetre's K-functional).
