  1. 1. Exercise-induced muscle soreness : a qualitative and quantitative study of human muscle morphology and function

    Author : Jan Fridén; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Human; exercise; exertion; eccentric contractions; muscles; muscle strength; muscle soreness; fibre types; myofibrils; muscle proteins; histocy to chemistry; ultrastructure; stereology;

    Abstract : Exercise-induced muscle soreness is characterized by stiffness, tenderness and pain during active movements and weakness of the affected musculature the days after unusually or particularly heavy work. The most pronounced subjective symptoms do not arise immediately but rather between a couple of hours to some days after the exercise (a delayed-onset of muscle soreness), the intensity of pain is greatest about 48 hours after the work. 3. 3. Re-evaluation of exercise-induced muscle soreness : an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study

    Author : Ji-Guo Yu; Bengt Saltin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anatomy; Anatomi; Anatomy; Anatomi;

    Abstract : Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a familiar experience for the elite and novice athletes. Symptoms can range from muscle tenderness to severe deliberating pain. It is generally believed that eccentric contractions produce higher tension on muscle fibres and connective tissues than concentric and isometric contractions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Muscle injury and pain : effects of eccentric exercise, sprint running, forward lunge and sports massage

    Author : Sven Jönhagen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Muscle injury; muscle pain; DOMS; eccentric; massage; sprint runner; EMG;

    Abstract : Muscle injuries are the most common injury in sports and both athletes and non-athletes are commonly seen in general practice and in the emergency department. Muscle pain is a common cause for absence from work and the cost to society is high. READ MORE

    Author : Christer Malm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Eccentric exercise; soccer; football; adaptation; immune system; muscle; inflammation; damage; leukocytes; growth factors; cytokines; adhesion; signaling; hormones.;

    Abstract : Physical exercise is essential for maintaining normal function of skeletal muscle. Muscle tissue also has a remarkable capacity for adaptation to changes in physical demand. In fact, without stimulation from physical activity, muscle tissue will atrophy. READ MORE
