6. Human Endogenous Retroviruses: Expression and Evolutionary Relationships
Abstract : The human genome contains genetic elements which are more or less similar to infectious retroviruses. These are called human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) and are thought to be remnants of infections in the primate lineage. READ MORE

7. Beta-glucose 1-phosphate interconverting enzymes in Lactococcus lactis: physiological role and regulation in maltose, trehalose and glucose metabolism
Abstract : Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), including Lactococcus lactis, are abundant in nature. These bacteria convert carbohydrates into mainly lactate by a rather uncomplicated metabolism. An improved understanding of the physiological and genetical mechanisms involved in carbohydrate metabolism and its regulation will improve the industrial use of LAB. READ MORE

8. The ubiquity and type diversity of papillomaviruses in normal skin
Abstract : Papillomaviruses are a diverse, epitheliotropic group of viruses. Some genotypes are the main cause of anogenital cancer in humans; others can induce skin lesions. In order to investigate the occurrence of subclinical skin infections with human papillomavirus (HPV), a pair of degenerate primers (FAP59/64) was designed. READ MORE

9. Lactobacillus in semi-hard cheese and their use as adjunct cultures
Abstract : The microflora of Herrgård cheese produced at three dairies was compared after three and six months maturation. The microflora of cheeses from two of the dairies was dominated by a spontaneous microflora of Lactobacillus after three months of ripening, while starter bacteria still dominated in cheese from the third dairy after six months. 10. Surface proteins of pathogenic streptococci
Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) and the group B streptococcus (GBS) are two important human pathogens that cause different types of diseases and express different surface structures implicated in virulence. This thesis focuses on several surface proteins expressed by these pathogens, analyzing the biological function of these proteins and their ability to elicit protective immunity. READ MORE
