  1. 1. YBCO nanowires to study nanoscale ordering in High-Tc Superconductors

    Author : Riccardo Arpaia; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanoscale ordering; nanoSQUIDs; nanowires; High-Tc superconductors; ultrathin films; oxygen doping; nanowire-based single photon detectors;

    Abstract : We present the realization of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) nanowires for both basic physics studies, which could help to elucidate the microscopic mechanisms of High critical Temperature Superconductors (HTS), and for novel applications.The first part of the thesis describes an improved nanopatterning procedure, based on e-beam lithography in combination with an amorphous carbon mask and a very gentle Ar+ ion etching. 2. 2. Tailoring Properties of Materials at the Nanoscale

    Author : Hossein Raanaei; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Igor A. Abrikosov; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Multilayers; magnetic anysotropy; amorphous materials; Magnetism; Magnetism; Materiefysik; Physics of Matter;

    Abstract : The knowledge of growth and characterizing techniques is essential for the preparation of high quality thin films and multilayers. Here, structural properties have been investigated by X-ray reflectivity, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy while the composition was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. 3. 3. Noise and electrical properties of YBCO nanostructures

    Author : Edoardo Trabaldo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; YBCO; noise; HTS; nanowire.; SQUID;

    Abstract : This thesis work deals with the investigation of noise properties in cuprate High critical Temperature Superconductor (HTS) YBCO nanoscale devices. Here the aim is to get a better understanding of nanoscale fluctuations in the normal state of HTS from which superconductivity evolves. READ MORE

  4. 4. There Is an Alloy at the End of the Rainbow: Structure and Optical Properties From Bulk to Nano

    Author : Magnus Rahm; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; thermodynamics; optical properties; dielectric functions; hydrides; alloy cluster expansions; alloys; nanoalloys;

    Abstract : Mixing different chemical species and decreasing dimensions to the nanoscale are two powerful approaches for improving materials. In both cases new properties emerge, and structure, composition, and chemical ordering can be tuned to tailor materials for specific purposes. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Role of Molecular Heterogeneity in the Structural Dynamics of Aqueous Solutions

    Author : Sharon Berkowicz; Fivos Perakis; Anders Hedqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; kemisk fysik; Chemical Physics;

    Abstract : Aqueous solutions constitute the basis of life, yet their complex and anomalous nature is far from well-understood. Transient molecular ordering gives rise to microscopic spatial liquid heterogeneities and fluctuations which are believed to play a key role in biochemical processes as well as in pure water, the latter of which could fundamentally alter our view on water as life's solvent.
