  1. 1. Tissue-Selective Activation and Toxicity of Substituted Dichlorobenzenes : Studies on the Mechanism of Cell Death in the Olfactory Mucosa

    Author : Anna Franzén; Eva Brittebo; Ingvar Brandt; Olavi Pelkonen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; tissue-selective toxicity; bioactivation; olfactory mucosa; substituted dichlorobenzenes; Bowman s glands; sustentacular cells; ER stress; Grp78; caspase-12; caspase-3; CYP2A5; protein adduction; nasal toxicity; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : The nasal passages are constantly exposed to both air- and bloodborne foreign compounds. In particular, the olfactory mucosa is demonstrated to be susceptible to a variety of drugs and chemicals. READ MORE

  2. 2. Analysis, metabolism, effects and biological monitoring of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone

    Author : Martin Carnerup; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin; industrial medicine; Occupational health; developmental toxicity; biomarkers; metabolsim; N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone; dermal absorption;

    Abstract : N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is an organic solvent widely used in the industry. Irritation of the eyes and in the respiratory system has been reported after occupational exposure to low air levels of NMP. The EU has also classified it as a developmental toxicant. NMP is easily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and airways and through skin. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Horizontal Ussing Chamber Method in Studies of Nasal Drug Delivery : Method Development and Applications Using Different Formulations

    Author : Karin Östh; Anna-Lena Ungell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : The results from this thesis leads to the following conclusions; HUM is a useful tool that fills a gap in the in vitro methods previously available to study nasal drug delivery. Using HUM, the pig respiratory nasal mucosa can obtain acceptable viability and retain it longer than the period of time needed for a transport experiment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies on the immuno-modulating properties of the cholera toxin A1-based fusion protein CTA1-DD

    Author : Anna Eriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adjuvant; cholera toxin; mucosa; targeting; B cell; immuno-modulation; vaccine;

    Abstract : The present work was aimed at exploring the immuno-modulating properties of the novel cholera toxin (CT)-based vaccine adjuvant CTA1-DD, which combines the full enzymatic activity of the A1 subunit of CT with B cell targeting. We have studied the efficacy of the CTA1-DD adjuvant to enhance immune responses in mice after nasal administration. READ MORE

  5. 5. Controlled Release Gel Formulations for Mucosal Drug Delivery

    Author : Mattias Paulsson; David Attwood; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : Drug delivery to nasal or ocular mucosa for either local or systemic action faces many obstacles – these routes are protected by effective mechanisms. Gel formulations with suitable rheological and mucoadhesive properties increase the contact time at the site of absorption. READ MORE
