  1. 1. Ticks - ecology, new hazards, and relevance for public health

    Author : Thérese Janzén; Monica Hammer; Patrik Dinnétz; Mona Petersson; Lars Korslund; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea region; eco-epidemiology; habitat; Ixodes persulcatus; Ixodes ricinus; landscape; risk; urbanization; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Abstract : Ticks and tick-borne diseases are ranking second only to mosquitoes as vectors of pathogens responsible for diseases in both humans and domestic animals. In the countries around the Baltic Sea, two medically important tick species are increasing both in range and abundance, and the public health threat posed by tick-borne diseases in this area is steadily growing. 2. 2. On computational homogenization of gradient crystal inelasticity

    Author : Kristoffer Carlsson; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; computational homogenization; gradient theory; multiscale modeling; crystal plasticity;

    Abstract : Crystal inelasticity is the main modeling technique employed to study the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline metallic materials. This class of models has the capability to represent micromechanical phenomena such as plastic slip, grain boundary interactions, and dislocation pile-up. READ MORE

  3. 3. Airborne Gravity Gradient, Magnetic and VLF datasets : Case studies of modelling, inversion and interpretation

    Author : Sayyed Mohammad Abtahi; Thomas Kalscheuer; Laust Pedersen; Jochen Kamm; Thorkild Rasmussen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; VLF; gravity gradient; magnetic; airborne; inversion; non-uniqueness;

    Abstract : Northern Sweden is one of the largest hosts for mineral resources in Europe and always has been an interesting area for researchers from various disciplines of Earth sciences. This dissertation is a comprehensive summary of three case study papers on airborne VLF, gravity gradient and magnetic data in the area. READ MORE

  4. 4. Population differentiation in Lythrum salicaria along a latitudinal gradient

    Author : Katarina Olsson; Jon Ågren; Susan Kalisz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; additive genetic variance; clinal variation; evolutionary constraints; G matrix; genetic correlation; natural selection; pollen limitation; population differentiation; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, quantitative genetic approaches, common-garden experiments, and field studies were combined to examine patterns of population differentiation and the genetic architecture of characters of putative adaptive significance in the widely distributed perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. In this work, I (1) documented patterns of population differentiation in phenology, life-history, and morphology along latitudinal gradients at different geographical scales, (2) investigated the genetic architecture of phenology, flower morphology, and inflorescence size, and (3) combined estimates of phenotypic selection in the field with information on the genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) to examine potential constraints to adaptive evolution. 5. 5. The Effect of Snow on Plants and Their Interactions with Herbivores

    Author : Mikaela Torp; Johan Olofsson; Christa Mulder; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Snow; arctic ecosystem; plant-herbivore interactions; phenology; nitrogen; phenolics; experimental manipulation; natural gradient; inter-annual variability; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The ongoing climate changes are predicted to accelerate fast in arctic regions with increases in both temperatures and precipitation. Although the duration of snow cover is generally expected to decrease in the future, snow depth may paradoxically increase in those areas where a large amount of the elevated precipitation will fall as snow.
