  2. 2. Food choice in fallow deer – experimental studies of selectivity

    Author : Ulrika Alm Bergvall; Olof Leimar; Frederick D. Provenza; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; behavioural syndrome; neighbour contrast defence; neighbour contrast susceptibility; simultaneous negative contrast; plant secondary compounds; tannins; Ethology and behavioural ecology; Etologi och beteendeekologi; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I experimentally investigate feeding selectivity in fallow deer (Dama dama), with respect to plant secondary compounds, especially tannins, which can decrease the quality of foods. I found that fallow deer avoided foods with higher amounts of tannic acid and Quebracho tannin, even though the deer ate some high-tannin food. READ MORE

  3. 3. Computer Assisted Video Microscopy : in Characterization of Capillary Ensembles

    Author : Claes Asker; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : computer assisted video microscopy; capillary loops; capillary ensembles; skin microcirculation; triangulation; nearest neighbour; MEDICINE;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on evaluation and analysis of capillary microcirculatory changes in the skin, that can be improved and extended by computer assisted video microscopy. Capillary microscopy has been used extensively, both in clinical practice and research, to study different phenomena in the microvasculature of the skin, mainly in the nailfold of fingers and toes where a large portion of the capillary loop can be observed. 4. 4. Have a fling with your neighbour, you might be less related

    Author : Marcus Ljungqvist; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem persistence are fragmentation of habitats and declining population sizes. For conservation biologists to understand the consequences of declining populations for the long term persistence and recovery of species worldwide, it is important to know and understand the underlying causes of potential threats, such as the depletion of genetic diversity, which is important for populations to be able to adapt and prevail in a changing environment. 5. 5. Love (eating) thy neighbour? Understanding and predicting food-web structure and dynamics

    Author : Kate Wootton; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Food webs are networks of feeding interactions that provide the backbone of ecological communities. The structure - who eats whom - and dynamics - how population abundances fluctuate as a result - of food webs depend on the traits of the species present. READ MORE
