  1. 1. Neonatal Resuscitation : Understanding challenges and identifying a strategy for implementation in Nepal

    Author : Ashish KC; Mats Målqvist; Uwe Ewald; Stefan Swartling Peterson; Susan Niermeyer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antepartum stillbirth; intrapartum stillbirth; neonatal mortality; first-day neonatal mortality; antenatal care; fetal heart rate monitoring; partogram; preterm; small-for-gestational-age; clinical adherence; neonatal resuscitation; skill retention; quality improvement cycle; Nepal; International Health; Internationell hälsa;

    Abstract : Despite the unprecedented improvement in child health in last 15 years, burden of stillbirth and neonatal death remain the key challenge in Nepal and the reduction of these deaths will be crucial for reaching the health targets for Sustainable development goal by 2030.The aim of this thesis was to explore the risk factors for stillbirth and neonatal death and change in perinatal outcomes after the introduction of the Helping Babies Breathe Quality Improvement Cycle (HBB QIC) in Nepal. 2. 2. Development of the gastrointestinal tract in young mammals : Effects of enteral provocation with protease or phytohaemagglutinin in neonatal rats

    Author : Ester Arevalo Sureda; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : gut; Intestine; Pancreas; development; precocious; protease; PHA; enterocytes; permeability; endocytosis; IgG; FcRn; Blimp1; T-lymphocyte; passive immunity; altricial; neonatal; suckling; athymic; rat; immunohistochemistry IHC ;

    Abstract : The rat, as an altritial species, is born with an immature gastrointestinal tract and intestinal barrier function, which is highly absorptive to milk-borne bioactive molecules that can pass undigested and reach the general circulation of the suckling newborn. This passage occurs by the neonatal-Fc-receptor (FcRn) binding and trancytosis of immunoglobulin G in the proximal small intestine (SI) and by the highly endocytic vacuolated enterocytes non-selectively in the distal SI. 3. 3. Neonatal Developmental Neurotoxicity of Brominated Flame Retardants, the Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)

    Author : Henrik Viberg; Per Eriksson; Susan Schantz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; brominated flame retardants; polybrominated diphenyl ethers; PBDE; neonatal; development; neurotoxicity; behaviour; cholinergic system; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines developmental neurotoxic effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), PBDE 99, PBDE 153, and the fully brominated PBDE 209, after exposure during the newborn period in rodents. Our environment contains vast numbers of contaminants, including the flame retardants, PBDEs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neurotoxic Effects of Nicotine During Neonatal Brain Development : Critical Period and Adult Susceptibility

    Author : Emma Ankarberg; Per Eriksson; Richard F. Seegal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; nicotine; neonatal development; behaviour; nicotinic receptors; susceptibility; cholinergic system; paraoxon; PBDE; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examined neurotoxic effects of nicotine exposure during a defined critical period of neonatal brain development in mice.In our environment there are numerous hazardous contaminants that an individual can be exposed to during its entire lifetime. READ MORE

  5. 5. Developmental Neurotoxicity in Mice Neonatally Co-exposed to Environmental Agents : PCB, PBDE, Methyl Mercury and Ionized Radiation - Interactions and Effects

    Author : Celia Fischer; Per Eriksson; Anders Fredriksson; Richard Seegal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; PCB; PBDE; MeHg; ionized radiation; neonatal; development; neurotoxicity; behavior; cholinergic system; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the neurotoxic effects in mice neonatally co-exposed to different toxic environmental agents during a defined critical period of the brains's rapid growth and development. Environmental toxic agents are incorporated in our environment. READ MORE
