  1. 1. Singing, sharing, soothing : Family-centred music therapy during painful procedures in neonatal care

    Author : Alexandra Ullsten; Ulrik Volgsten; Maria Klässbo; Mats Eriksson; Jane Edwards; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; music therapy; pain management; premature infants; family-centred; infant-directed singing; venepuncture; parents; dynamic forms of vitality;

    Abstract : To sing is to communicate. The soothing, comforting and emotional regulating properties of a lullaby are well-known cross-culturally and historically. This doctoral thesis addresses neonatal pain management from a novel and groundbreaking perspective, studying the efficacy of live music therapy on infants’ pain responses during venepuncture. 2. 2. Protection of the developing brain with trophic factors. Signaling through serine/threonine kinase pathways

    Author : Katarina Gustafson Brywe; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; brain; growth factors; ser thr kinases;

    Abstract : Background: Perinatal asphyxia still constitutes a clinical hazard associated withconsiderable neurologic morbidity. There is today no therapy in clinical use toprotect the brain after such insult. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and potentials for application in fetal cell replacement therapy

    Author : Karina Liuba; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; in utero hematopoietic cell transplantation; hematopoietic stem cell; multipotent progenitor; fetal therapy; heterotypic cell fusion;

    Abstract : Fetal cell replacement therapy or in utero hematopoietic cell transplantation (IUHCT) is proposed as a non-myeloablative alternative to bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for a number of inborn immunologic, hematologic and metabolic disorders. IUHCT represents the method through which variable amounts of natural or genetically modified hematopoietic cells can be transferred to the fetal recipient in hope of correcting the disorder and preventing postnatal permanent organ damage. 4. 4. Rational and Combinatorial Engineering of Affinity Proteins Towards Therapeutical Applications

    Author : Johan Seijsing; Torbjörn Gräslund; Uhlén Mathias; Inger Sandlie; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neonatal Fc receptor; FcRn; affibody molecule; immunoglobulin G IgG ; serum albumin SA ; albumin binding domain ABD ; half-life extension; blocking; autoimmune disease; pH-dependence; GAD67; GAD-1; gene therapy; Parkinson’s disease; zinc finger based artificial transcription factor; Biotechnology; Bioteknologi;

    Abstract : Protein engineering has had an immense impact on the development of biological drugs, including replacement therapies with engineered versions of insulin or factor VIII to treat diabetes or bleeding disorders, and monoclonal antibodies to treat cancer and various other malignancies. Now, with the next generation of treatment modalities coming up, including monoclonal reagents based on alternative scaffolds, gene and cell therapies, the importance of protein engineering to tailor-make these treatments is likely to increase further. 5. 5. Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy : inflammation and therapies

    Author : Elena Di Martino; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neonatal hypoxic ischemia (HI) is a severe condition characterized by a complex pathophysiology. The lack of oxygen (hypoxia) and blood flow (ischemia) leads to neuronal cell death via necrosis and apoptosis, and a consequent post-ischemic inflammation. HI brain injury may lead to seizures, cognitive and motor impairments, and death. READ MORE
