  1. 1. Growth conditions and individual quality in starlings

    Author : Martin Granbom; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; cost of reproduction; individual quality; long-term effects; early condition; starling; Sturnus vulgaris;

    Abstract : Variation in growth conditions during ontogeny may result in permanent differences in individual quality. This thesis focuses on how starlings are affected by environmental variation during the nestling period. Both landscape differences in food availability and experimental food supplementation affected survival and growth of nestlings. READ MORE

  2. 2. LIVING WITH PARASITES: AVIAN MALARIA, TELOMERE LENGTH AND LIFE HISTORY TRADE-OFFS

    Author : Asghar Muhammad; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Avian malaria; Plasmodium; qPCR; parasitemia; life history; reproduction; survival; feather growth; MHC; telomere length; heritability; telomere loss; fitness; wild population; Acrocephalus arundinaceus; Delichon urbica;

    Abstract : Haemosporidia is a well-studied group of parasites, which infect mammals, reptiles and birds and use blood sucking vectors for their transmission. By conducting natural population studies and experimental infections, We have been able to detect and quantify Haemosporidia from avian blood to investigate how these pathogens affect their avian hosts. 3. 3. Genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity in body traits of nestling blue tits

    Author : Camilla Kunz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : This thesis examines genetic and environmental contributions to variation in body traits in a population of free-living blue tits. It also investigates possible consequences for the evolution of body size. READ MORE

  4. 4. Genetic and environmental factors influencing growth and survival in willow tits, Parus montanus

    Author : Anna Thessing; Tomas Pärt; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns with the relationship between genetic and environmental attributes and their influence on offspring growth and survival in willow tits (Parus montanus). It also investigates the occurrence of directional or stabilising selection on body size during different life stages or times of the year. READ MORE

  5. 5. Trade-offs between life history traits and immune defence in the collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis

    Author : Dag Nordling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the effects of reproductive effort on immune function and parasite resistance in breeding collared flycatchers, Ficedula albicollis. It also focuses on the role of the immune function in the trade-off between number and fitness of offspring. READ MORE
