  1. 1. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in cerebral ischemia: a quantitative study on surviving and newly formed neurons

    Author : Elin Gustafsson; Lund Klinisk fysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; cerebral ischemia; neuronal survival; neurogenesis; hippocampus; striatum; immunocytochemistry; stereology; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; neurofysiologi; Neurology;

    Abstract : This study explores the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) for neuronal vulnerability and neurogenesis following cerebral ischemia in the rat. Cerebral ischemia results in selective neuronal cell loss in specific brain regions. We here demonstrate the rank order of vulnerability in two regions affected by global forebrain ischemia, i. 2. 2. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Author : Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 3. 3. Regeneration in the adult brain after focal cerebral ischemia : exploration of neurogenesis and angiogenesis

    Author : Wei Jiang; Jukka Jolkkonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; neurogenesis; angiogenesis; rats; mice; gliosis; BrdU; CBF; protein synthesis; ATP; penumbra; reperfusion; VEGF; 3-D confocal; photothrombosis; MCAO; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : Background: Ischemic stroke ranks as the third major cause of clinical mortality and the leading cause of handicap in adults. Each year, stroke occurs in about 30,000 Swedes. The severity of an acute ischemic stroke depends mainly on the degree and duration of local cerebral blood flow (lCBF) reduction. READ MORE

  4. 4. Behavior and cytogenesis following irradiation or isoflurane exposure to the developing brain

    Author : Niklas Karlsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiotherapy; isoflurane; anesthesia; hippocampus; neurogenesis; memory; learning; intellicage; dentate gyrus; trace fear conditioning; open field; object recognition;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the effects of an anesthetic agent, isoflurane, on the young brain and resulting behavioral effects were investigated. Anesthesia is commonly used in young children during surgery or other procedures associated with pain or discomfort. READ MORE

  5. 5. The effect of astrocytes and reactive gliosis on neurogenesis and astrogenesis in mice

    Author : Åsa Widestrand; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; astrocytes; intermediate filaments; neural stem cells; neurogenesis; astrogenesis; hippocampus;

    Abstract : Astrocytes are the most common cell type in mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin constitute intermediate filaments (known also as nanofilaments), a part of the cytoskeleton, in astrocytes. READ MORE
