  2. 2. Routine procedures in the care of the full-term newborn

    Author : Miriam Pettersson; Mats H. Eriksson; Andreas Ohlin; Fredrik Ahlsson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Newborn; pain; neonatal hyperbilirubinemia; home phototherapy; neonatal hip examination; oral sweet solution; pain assessment;

    Abstract : This thesis presents four studies on routine procedures used in the care of the full-term newborn. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of these routines and endeavour to find ways to improve them.Study I, an observational study, included 28 healthy newborns, assessing pain during neonatal hip examination. 3. 3. Premedication for intubation in newborn infants; pain assessment, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

    Author : Elisabeth Norman; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Premedication; pain; premature; newborn; aEEG; randomized controlled trial; thiopental; morphine; remifentanil; rapid sequence induction; ibntubation; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics;

    Abstract : Preterm infants undergo intensive care during a vulnerable period with hemodynamic instability and a rapidly developing and immature CNS. Adequate pain management is essential, since pain experience might lead to acute physiological reactions as well as neurological and neuropsychological sequels. READ MORE

  4. 4. The EEG of the Newborn Brain - Detection of Hypoxia and Prediction of Outcome

    Author : Nils Löfgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; telemedicine; neonatal; prediction; infraslow EEG; cerebral; entropy; asphyxia; EEG; VLFA; hypoxia; Kolmogorov complexity; qEEG; detection; spectral estimation; newborn;

    Abstract : Brain function requires a continuous flow of oxygen and an insufficient supply (hypoxia) for a few minutes during the first period of life may have severe consequences; consequences which might impact both the life of the individual who has been struck and his or her family. Therefore, there is a need to find a method which can enable the detection of an insufficient oxygen supply at an early stage, before brain damage becomes permanent. READ MORE

  5. 5. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs

    Author : Karin Sävman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Asphyxia; hypoxia; posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; preterm; newborn; perinatal; brain; cerebrospinal fluid; cytokines; IL-1ß; IL-6; IL-8; TNF-a; non-protein-bound-iron;

    Abstract : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines.
