  1. 1. Developmental Aspects of Drug Transport Across the Blood-Brain Barrier

    Author : Jörgen Bengtsson; Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes; Ann-Cathrin Engwall; Sven Björkman; Elizabeth C.M. de Lange; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Blood-brain barrier; development; active transport; tight junction proteins; microdialysis; recovery; morphine; nitrofurantoin; Bcrp; microarray; real-time PCR; in vitro; in vivo; LC-MS MS; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; Pharmacokinetics and Drug Therapy; Farmakokinetik och läkemedelsterapi;

    Abstract : The developmental aspect of drug transport across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) was investigated. Microdialysis was used to study unbound morphine BBB transport at different ages in sheep. An in vitro study was performed to find differentially expressed genes in brain capillary-rich fractions of the brain in rats of different ages. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genital and urinary tract infections in pregnancy in southern India : diagnosis, management and impact om perinatal outcome

    Author : Elizabeth Mathai; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Urinary tract infection; antimicrobial resistance; Chlamydia trachomatis; E Coli; CRP; neonatal infection; syphilis; nitrofurantoin; integrons; antenatal; India.;

    Abstract : Background: Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections varies in different parts of the world. These infections, occurring during pregnancy, can result in adverse outcome. There is paucity of information on the prevalence, effects and management of such infections in pregnancy in India. READ MORE

  3. 3. Extended-Spectrum ß-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae : Antibiotic consumption, Detection and Resistance Epidemiology

    Author : Åse Östholm Balkhed; Lennart Nilsson; Håkan Hanberger; Hans-Jurg Monstein; Anita Hällgren; Mats Kalin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Extended-Spectrum ß-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae; Antibiotic consumption; Detection Methods; Multiplex PCR; Resistance Epidemiology; Multi-resistance; E. coli; ESBL; fecal carriage; faecal carriage; travel;

    Abstract : ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae are emerging worldwide and they are frequently multi-drug resistant, thus limiting treatment options for infections caused by these pathogens.The overall aim of the thesis was to investigate ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in a Swedish county. 4. 4. Urinary tract infection in small children: aspects of bacteriology, vesicoureteral reflux and renal damage

    Author : Svante Swerkersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Children; Urinary tract infection; Vesicoureteral reflux; Renal damage; Bacterial count; Recurrence; Antibiotic resistance; Urine sampling;

    Abstract : Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a prevalent bacterial infection in children. The diagnosis is based on growth of bacteria in urine specimen and treatment is chosen out of knowledge of the present antimicrobial resistance situation. Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a well-known risk factor for UTI in children. READ MORE

  5. 5. It Takes Two to Tango : Bacterial heterogeneity and host cell features govern Salmonella infection

    Abstract : Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S.Tm) causes enterocolitis with significant worldwide morbidity and mortality. The general aim of this thesis is to investigate variation in host cell invasion mechanisms used by S.Tm across different host cell contexts, as well as the influence of bacterial cell-cell heterogeneity on invasion-relevant S.
