1. Second generation of Glucose Biosensors : Biofuel cells and Neurotransitters
Abstract : Different FAD dependent GDH enzymes together with the Os-redox polymer Os(4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine)2(PVI)10Cl]+ and a modified graphite electrode was shown to have distinct selectivity and high turnover rates towards glucose. The results of this study suggest that such electrodes may be applied either for glucose determination or as bioanodes in glucose biofuel cells. READ MORE

2. A novel single skeletal muscle cell in vitro motility assay : effects of aging and non-enzymatic glycosylation on myosin function
Abstract : The aims of this study were to develop a single skeletal muscle fiber in vitro motility assay, and to employ the assay in order to study the effects of aging and non-enzymatic glycosylation on the mechanical properties of the motor protein myosin in an attempt to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the aging-related impairment in regulation of muscle function. Myosin was extracted from a millimeter short single muscle fiber segment directly onto a nitrocellulosecoated coverslip for subsequent analyses of the functional properties of the motor protein. 3. Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and nitric oxide
Abstract : Hypoxia causes pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV), improving oxygenation by redistribution of the pulmonary blood flow to better oxygenated lung regions. HPV is intrinsic to the pulmonary vascular smooth muscle cell, but can be modulated by several vasoactive substances, as for example endothelium derived nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1). 4. Synthesising Metal Oxide Materials and Their Composite Nanostructures for Sensing and Optoelectronic Device Applications
Abstract : Research on nanomaterials has been revolutionized in the last few years because of the attractive properties they have in comparison to the bulk phase of similar materials. These properties are physical, chemical, catalytic and optical. READ MORE

5. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web
Abstract : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish.
