  1. 1. The role of inland waters in the carbon cycle at high latitudes

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet

    Author : Erik Lundin; Umeå universitet.; [2014]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lakes; streams; carbon C ; carbon dioxide CO2 ; methane CH4 ; dissolved inorganic carbon DIC ; boreal; sub-arctic; arctic; emission; sediments; burial; budget; Limnology; limnologi; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Understanding the drivers of climate change requires knowledge about the global carbon (C) cycle. Although inland waters play an important role in the C cycle by emitting and burying C, streams and lakes are in general overlooked in bottom-up approached C budgets. READ MORE

  2. 2. Holocene climate change in high latitudes recorded by stable isotopes in peat

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology, Stockholm University

    Author : Päivi Kaislahti Tillman; Stockholms universitet.; [2010]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; -; NATURAL SCIENCES Earth sciences Exogenous earth sciences Quaternary geology; NATURVETENSKAP Geovetenskap Exogen geovetenskap Kvartärgeologi; Quarternary Geology; kvartärgeologi;

    Abstract : A key to the understanding of natural and human induced climate variations is to reconstruct past changes from different environments. No outstanding method for general use has been pinpointed, instead, a need of multi-proxy studies is often stressed and the reconstructions are under constant improvement by new techniques. 3. 3. Magnetic orientation in migratory birds

    University dissertation from Rachel Muheim

    Author : Rachel Muheim; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Djurekologi; Animal ecology; cue-conflict; clock-shift; cue calibration; geomagnetic field; high Arctic latitudes; Emlen funnel; magnetic compass; magnetoreception; navigation; migration; bird; orientation;

    Abstract : My thesis focuses on magnetic orientation in migratory birds, i.e. how they can perceive information from the Earth’s magnetic field and use it for orientation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Emission of methane from northern lakes and ponds

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Institutionen för geologiska vetenskaper

    Author : Martin Wik; Stockholms universitet.; [2016]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lakes; ponds; water bodies; methane; fluxes; ebullition; stable isotopes; arctic; subarctic; carbon cycling; climate change; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Northern lakes and ponds are abundant and emit large amounts of the potent climate forcer methane to the atmosphere at rates prone to change with amplified Arctic warming. In spite of being important, fluxes from surface waters are not well understood. READ MORE

  5. 5. Holocene climate and environmental change in high latitudes as recorded by stable isotopes in peat deposits

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology, Stockholm University

    Author : Päivi Kaislahti Tillman; Stockholms universitet.; [2012]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stable isotopes; Holocene; subarctic; climate; Sphagnum fuscum; Quarternary Geology; kvartärgeologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in α-cellulose isolated from Sphagnum fuscum moss remains were used as climate proxies. The main focus was to implement the methods in records from high latitude peatlands in the Northern Hemisphere (west-central Canada and north-eastern European Russia), reconstruct palaeoclimate of the studied regions during the Holocene, and evaluate the compatibility of results with other proxy records, especially tree-ring isotope time-series.
