  1. 1. Flow and Compression of Granulated Powders : The Accuracy of Discrete Element Simulations and Assessment of Tablet Microstructure

    Author : Ann-Sofie Persson; Göran Frenning; Göran Alderborn; Marie Wahlgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Discrete Element Method; Granule; Flow; Angle of Repose; Discharge Rate; Shear; Rolling friction; Compression; Elastic deformation; Microstructure; Degree of compression; Tensile strength; Galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : Simulations are powerful and important tools for gaining insight into powder processes. Ultimately, simulations have the potential to replace experiments. Thus, accurate models and insight into the essential factors for descriptions of powder behaviour are required. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modelling of Bingham Suspensional Flow : Influence of Viscosity and Particle Properties Applicable to Cementitious Materials

    Author : Annika Gram; Björn Lagerblad; Ulrich Diederichs; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Self-Compacting Concrete; SCC; Fresh concrete flow; Numerical simulation; Viscosity; Open channel flow;

    Abstract : Simulation of fresh concrete flow has spurged with the advent of Self-Compacting Concrete, SCC. The fresh concrete rheology must be compatible with the reinforced formwork geometry to ensure complete and reliable form filling with smooth concrete surfaces. READ MORE

  3. 3. Numerical Studies of Flow and AssociatedLosses in the Exhaust Port of a Diesel Engine

    Author : Yue Wang; Laszlo Fuchs; Mihai Mihaescu; Angelo Onorati; KTH; []
    Keywords : Internal Combustion Engine; Exhaust flow; Exhaust Valve; Exhaust Port; Large Eddy Simulation; Valve and Piston Motion; Total Pressure Losses; Energy Losses; Discharge coefficient; Flow Losses; Flow structures; Air Flow Bench; Engine-like Conditions; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Abstract : In the last decades, the focus of internal combustion engine development has moved towards more efficient and less pollutant engines. In a Diesel engine, approximately 30-40% of the energy provided by combustion is lost through the exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are hot and therefore rich of energy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Simulation of individual cells in flow

    Author : Lailai Zhu; Luca Brandt; Michael Graham; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydrodynamic interaction; swimming microorganisms; capsule; Stokes flow; finite element method; boundary integral method; general geometry Ewald method; spectral element method; viscoelastic fluid; cellular deformation; flow cytometry; cell sorting; microrheology; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. Abstract : The subject of flow past slender bluff bodies is of relevance to technical problems associated with energy conservation, structural design and acoustic emissions. The present work is restricted to an important sub-class of slender bluff body flow --- the incompressible flow around a stationary cylinder having a rectangular cross section, the cylinder being exposed to a constant free stream velocity.
