  1. 1. Olfactory Cognition : The Case of Olfactory Imagery

    Author : Artin Arshamian; Maria Larsson; Jane Plailly; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Olfactory imagery; sniffing; olfactory awareness; odor threshold; episodic odor memory; odor identification; odor evoked autobiographical memory; fMRI; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : The capacity to form olfactory images has received less attention than the formation of visual and auditory images. The evidence in favor of such ability is also inconsistent. This thesis explored some of the characteristics of olfactory imagery through three empirical studies. READ MORE

  2. 2. Olfactory Transfer of Analgesic Drugs After Nasal Administration

    Author : Ulrika Espefält Westin; Erik Björk; Eva Brittebo; Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes; Paolo Colombo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmaceutics; Nasal administration; Olfactory transfer; Olfactory pathways; Central nervous system; Blood-brain barrier; Nasal respiratory mucosa; Olfactory mucosa; Olfactory bulb; Horizontal Ussing chamber; Morphine; Dihydroergotamine; Rat; Mouse; Swine; Autoradiography; Viability; Powder formulations; Galenisk farmaci;

    Abstract : Nasal administration of analgesics for achieving rapid pain relief is currently a topic of great interest. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) restricts access to the central nervous system (CNS) for several central-acting drugs, such as morphine and dihydroergotamine, which results in a substantial effect delay. 3. 3. Olfactory Function : The Influence of Demographic, Cognitive, and Genetic Factors

    Author : Margareta Hedner; Maria Larsson; Lars-Göran Nilsson; Claire Murphy; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Olfaction; odor identification; odor threshold; odor discrimination; aging; gender; ApoE; BDNF; val66met; association study; population-based; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Olfactory function is affected by demographic, cognitive, and genetic factors. In the present thesis, three empirical studies investigated individual differences in olfactory ability. Study I explored demographic and cognitive correlates in common olfactory tasks; odor detection, odor discrimination, and odor identification. READ MORE

  4. 4. Olfactory Metacognition : A Metamemory Perspective on Odor Naming

    Author : Fredrik Jönsson; Mats Olsson; Henrik Olsson; Egon P. Köster; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; odor identification; odor naming; metamemory; confidence; tip of the tongue experience; tip of the nose experience; feeling of knowing; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Abstract : Although many aspects of odor naming have received attention during the years, the participants' own cognitions (metamemory) about their naming attempts have not. (i) We showed that feeling of knowing (FOK) judgments accompanying odor naming failures are predictive of later recognition (Study I) or retrieval (Study III) of the missing name, but to a lesser degree than equivalent judgments about names of persons. 5. 5. Computational Modelling of Early Olfactory Processing

    Author : Malin Sandström; Anders Lansner; Jeanette Hällgren Kotaleski; Thomas Nowotny; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; olfaction; olfactory system; olfactory bulb; olfactory receptor neuron; synchronization; CaMKII; mathematical modelling; lukt; luktsystemet; luktbulben; synkronisering; CaMKII; matematisk modellering; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : Chemical sensing is believed to be the oldest sensory ability. The chemical senses, olfaction and gustation, developed to detect and analyze information in the form of air- or waterborne chemicals, to find food and mates, and to avoid danger. READ MORE
