  1. 1. On protein structure, function and modularity from an evolutionary perspective

    Author : Robert Pilstål; Björn Wallner; Maria Sunnerhagen; Mauno Vihinen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioinformatics; structure; biology; intrinsical; disorder; protein; sequence; evolution; mutation; epistasis; function; allostery; dynamics; simulation; prediction; graph; network; bioinformatik; struktur; biologi; strukturbiologi; intrinsiellt; oordnad; protein; sekvens; evolution; mutation; epistasis; funktion; allosteri; dynamik; simulation; prediktion; graf; nätverk;

    Abstract : We are compounded entities, given life by a complex molecular machinery. When studying these molecules we have to make sense of a diverse set of dynamical nanostructures with wast and intricate patterns of interactions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Structural changes during cellulose composite processing

    Author : Helena Halonen; Monica Ek; Tommy Iversen; Derek D. Gray; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; CP MAS 13C NMR; cellulose; fibril aggregation; biocomposite; compression moulding; supramolecular structure;

    Abstract : Two approaches for creating a new all-cellulose composite material have been studied: the biosynthesis of compartmentalised bacterial cellulose fibril aggregates and the compression moulding of commercial chemical wood pulps processed with only water. The objective was to study the structural changes during processing and the complexity of relating the mechanical properties of the final biocomposites to the nanoscale structure was highlighted. 3. 3. Biobased carbon fibers from solution spun lignocellulosic precursors

    Author : Andreas Bengtsson; Monica Ek; Maria Sedin; Elisabet Brännvall; Elisabeth Sjöholm; Johannes Ganster; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carbon fiber; Carbonization; Cellulose; Kraft pulp; Softwood kraft lignin; Solution spinning; Stabilization; Barrvedslignin; Cellulosa; Karbonisering; Kolfiber; Lösningsmedelsspinning; Stabilisering; Sulfatmassa; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : Carbon fibers (CFs) have excellent mechanical properties and a low density, making themattractive as a reinforcing fiber in composites. The use of CFs is limited to high-end applications,since they are produced from an expensive fossil-based precursor via an energy-intensivemanufacturing process, explaining the need for cheaper CFs from renewables. 4. 4. Lignin- and PAN-based carbon fibres as negative electrodes for alkali-ion batteries

    Author : Kevin Peuvot; Göran Lindbergh; Dan Zenkert; Enn Lust; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; hard carbon; lithium-ion batteries; sodium-ion batteries; potassium-ion batteries; lignin-based carbon fibres; PAN-based carbon fibres; free-standing electrodes; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The development of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have accelerated since they can now reach similar gravimetric energy densities as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) but with a lower environmental impact. Hard carbon is the most common negative electrode for SIBs and KIBs and can be made from renewable resources such as lignin. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ab initio and phenomenological modeling of materials related to CVD hard coatings

    Author : Axel Forslund; Andrei V. Ruban; Paul Erhart; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Materials Science and Engineering;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the work based on two different tools in computational materials science: a first-principles approach, namely that of density functional theory, and the CALPHAD approach.These two methods were used in this work to calculate properties of materials related to hard coatings, in particular coatings produced with chemical vapor deposition for the purpose of wear protection in cutting tools.
