1. Genetic and Metabolic Markers for the Development of Diabetes after Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Abstract : The aims of this work were to determine the prevalence of postpartum diabetes among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in a prospective study 5 years postpartum; to characterize these women according to insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity, autoimmunity and genetics; and to identify possible markers and predictors for the development of manifest diabetes. The subjects were recruited through a regional screening programme in which oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) are routinely offered to all pregnant women. READ MORE

2. Peripheral polyneuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance. Correlations between morphology, neurophysiology, and clinical findings
Abstract : Diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy (PN) is a common and serious complication of diabetes. The prevalence of PN is rising with the global burden of type 2 diabetes. The causal mechanisms of PN are not fully understood, but both vascular and metabolic factors play a role. READ MORE

3. Integrated Modeling of Glucose and Insulin Regulation Following Provocation Experiments
Abstract : Blood glucose is controlled by a complex system of insulin and other hormones to assure a constant supply of glucose to the tissues. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder which is characterized by progressively worsening glycemic control due to a relative deficiency of insulin secretion and a decreased response to insulin. 4. Aspects on chronic stress and glucose metabolism in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis and in women with localized provoked vulvodynia
Abstract : Objective: To evaluate the degree of stress in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) and in women with localized provoked vulvodynia (LPV) (former vulvar vestibulitis syndrome) compared with controls. To measure the change of glucose in plasma and in vaginal secretions during oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) in women with RVVC, and in healthy control subjects. READ MORE

5. Clinical and pathophysiological aspects of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy
Abstract : Objective: The pathogenesis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) involves impaired bile acid and estrogen/progesterone metabolism and excretion based on genetic and environmental factors. In this thesis we evaluated different pathophysiological and clinical aspects of ICP, i.e. READ MORE
