1. Frustrated magnetism in icosahedral structures : The influence of order-disorder in quasicrystals and approximant crystals
Abstract : This work will begin with an introduction to quasicrystals (QCs) and their structure, defining the unit cell-equivalent for icosahedral quasiperiodicity: a 3D tiling based on the golden ratio and aperiodic in all three dimensions. We briefly present the cut-and-project method used to generate QCs from a higher dimension hypercrystal, and how to build the 3D Penrose tilings, composed of the two golden rhombohedra. READ MORE

2. Symmetry, Disorder and the Josephson Effect in d-Wave Superconductors
Abstract : This thesis focuses on aspects of symmetry, disorder and the Josephson effect in d-wave superconductors which are generically characterized by sign changes of the gap function .DELTA.k in certain directions with respect to the underlying crystal lattice. READ MORE

3. From Disorder to Order : Extracting clinical findings from unstructured text
Abstract : Medical disorders and findings are examples of important information in health record text. Through developing methods for automatically extracting these entities from the health record text, the possibility of making use of the information by automatic computerised processes increases. 4. Body Dysmorphic Disorder : Capturing a prevalent but under-recognized disorder
Abstract : BackgroundIndividuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are highly distressed due to defects they perceive in their physical appearance that are not noticeable to others. The condition often leads to impaired functioning in relationships, socialization, and intimacy and a decreased ability to function in work, school, or other daily activities. READ MORE

5. Transport phenomena in quantum wells and wires in presence of disorder and interactions
Abstract : Present-day electronics employ circuits of smaller and smaller dimensions, and today the length scales are so small that the laws of physics which rule micro-cosmos, quantum mechanics, become directly important. This thesis reports on theoretical work on electron transport in different nanostructures. READ MORE
