1. Spectroelectrochemistry of Redox Enzymes
Abstract : A low volume and long optical path spectroelectrochemical cell was constructed and tested in a number of applications such as detection of direct electron transfer (DET) between redox enzymes and gold electrodes, determination of the formal potentials of redox centres in proteins and enzymes, as well as mechanistic studies of heterogeneous and intermolecular electron transfer of copper oxidases and succinate:quinine oxidoreductase (Complex II). The existence of DET between enzymes and electrodes was demonstrated for theophylline oxidase, cytochrome P450 cam, laccase, bilirubin oxidase, sulphite oxidase and Complex II. READ MORE

2. Crystallographic studies on redox enzymes containing the thioredoxin fold
Abstract : Three-dimensional structures of two redox enzymes, glutathione peroxidase from human plasma and a protein disulfide oxidoreductase from the archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus, have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Glutathione peroxidases constitute a family of antioxidant seleno-enzymes that catalyze the reduction of a variety of hydroperoxides. READ MORE

3. Significance of polymorphisms in human xenobiotic metabolising enzymes
Abstract : Cigarette smoke is the primary cause of lung cancer but urban air pollution and certain occupational exposures have also been found to elevate the incidence of lung cancer. These exposures contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which can be metabolically activated to highly reactive compounds capable of binding to DNA and initiating the carcinogenic process unless they are eliminated. 4. Structural studies of enzymes regulating bacterial life style and cell wall biogenesis
Abstract : Bacteria can adapt to different biotic and abiotic environments by changing their life style, switching between sessile or motile, free-living or community-bound, virulent or dormant states. Each bacterium also faces the challenges of maintaining a protective barrier while growing, replicating and responding to environmental changes. READ MORE

5. Pyridine Nucleotides in Plant Mitochondria. Amounts, metabolism and contribution to electron transport
Abstract : HPLC analysis was used for direct quantification of amounts and redox levels of pyridine nucleotides in plant mitochondria. The amount of NAD(H) and NADP+ varied, 1.0-3.7 and 0-0. READ MORE
