  1. 1. Analysis of PAHs and their transformations products in contaminated soil and remedial processes

    Author : Staffan Lundstedt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; PAHs; degredation; transformation; formation; accumulation; oxidation products; metabolites; oxogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; oxy-PAHs; soil; gasworks; remediation; bioremediation; bioslurry; wood-rotting fungi; Fenton´s reagent; avaliability; bioavaliability; chemical analysis; extraction; pressurized liquid extraction; PLE; accelerated solvent extraction; ASE; Miljökemi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Soil that is heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is often found at the sites of former gasworks and wood-impregnation plants. Since PAHs are toxic these sites represent a hazard to human health and the environment, and therefore they need to be treated, preferably by a method that destroys the contaminants, and thus eliminates the problem permanently. 2. 2. Traffic related air pollution with emphasis on particle associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : Tire wear and biodiesel exhaust emissions

    Author : Ioannis Sadiktsis; Roger Westerholm; Jan Andersson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : Particulate matter (PM) is regarded as one of the more important components of air pollution causing adverse health effects. A large group of compounds associated with PM are polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) which comprises polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). READ MORE

  3. 3. Chemical and bioanalytical characterisation of PAH-contaminated soils : identification, availability and mixture toxicity of AhR agonists

    Author : Maria Larsson; Magnus Engwall; Jessika Hagberg; Peter Haglund; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polycyclic aromatic compounds; Soil; Risk assessment; Mixture studies; AhR-mediated activity; REPs; GC MS; H4IIE-luc bioassay; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : Contaminated soils are a worldwide problem. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common contaminants in soil at former industrial areas, especially at old gasworks sites, gas stations and former wood impregnation facilities. READ MORE

  4. 4. Particle emissions from residential wood and biodiesel combustion

    Author : Robin Nyström; Christoffer Boman; Dan Boström; Markus Broström; Michael Strand; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Combustion; biomass; wood; biodiesel; particulate matter; emissions; aerosols; physicochemical properties; size distribution; PAH;

    Abstract : Emissions from anthropogenic combustion sources, such as vehicles and biomass combustion, contribute significantly to ambient particulate matter (PM) both on a local and global scale. Exposure to ambient PM and air pollution in general is linked to a variety of different health effects and it has been estimated that as many as 2. READ MORE

  5. 5. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : DNA damage and cell signaling

    Author : Åse Mattsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Oxidative stress is a threat to our wellbeing. The formation of reactive oxygen species may result in oxidative lesions in DNA and RNA. When challenging A549 cells with 18O-labeled hydrogen peroxide, we found that RNA was between 14-25 times more sensitive to [18O]-8-oxoGuo formation than [18O]-8-oxodGuo formation in DNA. READ MORE
