  1. 1. Tracing pathways in the ocean circulation : A temperature and salinity perspective

    Author : Sara Berglund; Kristofer Döös; Jonas Nycander; Göran Broström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lagrangian trajectories; Climate modelling; Atlantic Ocean; Southern Ocean; Ocean circulation; heat; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : The ocean circulation plays an essential role in our climate system. It redistributes heat, salt, carbon and other tracers across the globe, making the climate of Earth more moderate. This thesis targets density differences that are driving the ocean circulation. These differences are caused by changes in temperature and salinity. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nutrient dynamics in the North Pacific subtropical gyre : phosphorus fluxes in the upper oligotrophic ocean

    Author : Karin Björkman; Tom Berman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : In the contemporary North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSG) the extant microbial community is based on prokaryotic cells with the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus dominating the phototrophic component. The prevalence of dinitrogen (N2) fixing organisms, such as Trichodesmium spp. READ MORE

  4. 4. Arctic Ocean benthic foraminifera preservation and Mg/Ca ratios : Implications for bottom water palaeothermometry

    Author : Natalia Barrientos; Helen Coxall; Martin Jakobsson; Steve Barker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic Ocean; benthic foraminifera; Mg Ca-temperature; calcite preservation; Marine Geology; maringeologi;

    Abstract : Reconstructions of Arctic Ocean palaeotemperatures are needed to disentangle natural variability from anthropogenic changes and understand the role of ocean heat transport in forcing or providing feedbacks on Arctic climate change. Despite known complications with calcareous microfossil preservation in Arctic Ocean sediments, calcareous benthic foraminifera can be common in interglacial sequences. READ MORE

  5. 5. Late Eocene through Oligocene calcareous nannofossils from the paleo-equatorial Pacific Ocean – taxonomy, preservation history, biochronology and evolution

    Author : Teodora Blaj; Jan Backman; Jorijntje Henderiks; Isabella Raffi; Paul Bown; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine sediments; calcareous nannofossils; late Eocene; Oligocene; biochronology; evolution; morphometry; taxonomy; ODP Leg 199 Site 1218; paleo-equatorial Pacific Ocean; Historical geology and palaeontology; Historisk geologi och paleontologi; Marine Geoscience; marin geovetenskap;

    Abstract : This study aims to unravel the ecological and evolutionary dynamics within the calcareous nannofossil communities at the Eocene/Oligocene (E/O) transition and during the Oligocene time when Cenozoic 'icehouse' conditions were established. The main question this study aims to answer is whether the changes in the nannofossil assemblages were controlled by intrinsic evolutionary trends or if the changes were controlled by environmental factors such as changes in temperature and nutrient availability in the surface water.
