  1. 1. Frk/Shb Signalling in Pancreatic Beta-cells : Roles in Islet Function, Beta-cell Development and Survival as Implicated in Mouse Knockout Models

    Author : Björn Åkerblom; Michael Welsh; Hindrik Mulder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medical cell biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The adaptor protein Shb and the non-receptor tyrosine kinase Frk have been implicated in intracellular signalling in insulin-producing beta cells. In this thesis, knockout mice are used to further elucidate the role of Shb and Frk for beta cell number, cytokine-induced cell death, and glucose homeostasis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hormone-Sensitive Lipase and Protein Kinase B; Molecular characterization in testis, adipose tissue and pancreatic beta cells

    Author : Lena Stenson; Signaltransduktionsforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; signal transduction; pancreas; beta cells; adipocyte; insulin; Akt; protein kinase B; spermatogenesis; cholesterol esterase; hormone-sensitive lipase; testis; cAMP; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; enzymologi;

    Abstract : Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and protein kinase B (PKB) are enzymes that in different ways are associated with lipid metabolism. While HSL is the well-known lipolytic enzyme responsible for hydrolysis of stored triacylglycerols in adipose tissue, PKB is a recently identified serine/threonine protein kinase, ubiquitously expressed and involved in signal transduction pathways induced by insulin and growth factors. 3. 3. Studies of individual pancreatic -cells : Electrophysiological analysis of rhythmic behaviour and development of new techniques

    Author : Staffan Dryselius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Diabetes; pancreatic beta-cells; insulin release; signal transduction; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; patch clamp; ATP-regulated potassium channels; voltage-dependent calcium channels; metabolism; calcium ion; strontium ion; manganese ion; wavelets; de-noising; pattern recognition; superfusion; solution changes; microscopic labelling; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The insulin concentration in blood varies periodically, which is believed to prevent down-regulation of the hormone receptors. Loss of the regular insulin oscillations is considered to be an early sign of developing diabetes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Lipid metabolism in the pancreatic beta-cell. Implications for insulin secretion

    Author : Malin Fex; Celiaki och diabetes; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi; Endocrinology; secreting systems; Lipid metabolism; Insulin secretion; Beta-cells;

    Abstract : We have investigated the role of lipid metabolism with regard to beta-cell function and insulin secretion. Lipids are known to play a crucial functional role in the pancreatic beta-cell, where they are essential for adequate hormone release, but may also exert a long-term toxic effect, leading to beta-cell dysfunction. 5. 5. Mitochondrial form and function in pancreatic β-cells and brown adipocytes

    Author : Jakob D Wikström; Jan Nedergaard; Roberta Gottlieb; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mitochondria; beta cells; brown adipose tissue; diabetes; obesity; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the role of mitochondria in pancreatic β-cells and brown adipose tissue (BAT). Two main aspects of mitochondria were explored; mitochondrial functional efficiency and the interrelationship between mitochondrial shape and function. READ MORE
