  1. 1. Influences of paratendinous innervation and non-neuronal substance P in tendinopathy : studies on human tendon tissue and an experimental model of Achilles tendinopathy

    Author : Gustav Andersson; Patrik Danielson; Sture Forsgren; Håkan Alfredson; David A. Hart; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Achilles tendon; tendinopathy; tendinosis; paratenon; innervation; substance P; neuropeptides; neurokinin-1 receptor; Anatomy; Anatomi; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Pain of the musculoskeletal system is one of the most common reasons for people seeking medical attention, and is also one of the major factors that prevent patients from working. Chronic tendon pain, tendinopathy, affects millions of workers world-wide, and the Achilles tendon is an important structure often afflicted by this condition. READ MORE

  2. 2. On the nature and etiology of chronic achilles tendinopathy

    Author : Mats Åström; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; gender; physical activity; aging; imaging; malalignment; blood supply; partial rupture; tendinosis; chronic tendinopathy; Achilles tendon; achillodynia; Surgery; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : The present studies included 362 consecutive patients and 147 healthy controls and were conducted to provide a rational basis for treatment and future research. The major lesion was a focal non-inflammatory tendon degeneration (tendinosis). Twenty per cent of the cases were complicated by a secondary partial rupture. The paratenon was normal. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aspects of aetiology, pathoanatomy and diagnostic methods in chronic mid-portion achillodynia

    Author : Tomas Movin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Achilles tendon; achillodynia; pathology; MR-imaging; ultrasonography; gadolinium; contrast enhancement; glycosaminoglycan; aetiology; core biopsy.;

    Abstract : The objectives of this thesis are to study aetiology and pathoanatomy, and to evaluate diagnostic methods in patients with long-standing pain and tenderness localised to the mid portion of the Achilles tendon. Treatment had failed to relieve symptoms prior to referral to our clinic, where some of these patients underwent surgical treatment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Peptidergic innervation of periarticular tissue : a study in the rat

    Author : Paul Ackermann; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Immunohistochemistry; radioimmunoassay; pain measurement; Achilles tendon; collateral ligaments; joint capsules; tendon rupture; regeneration; peripheral nervous system; neuropeptides; delta opioid receptor;

    Abstract : Painful musculo-skeletal disorders pose a tremendous burden on the healthcare system, the main reason being the limited knowledge of the underlying pathomechanisms and lack of specific treatment. Hypothetically, the peripheral nervous system in the musculo-skeletal tissues plays an important role in the regulation of pain, inflammation, vasoactivity and also tissue repair. READ MORE

  5. 5. Neuronal mechanisms in tendon healing : effects of mobilization and immobilization

    Author : Daniel K-I Bring; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The incidence of tendon injuries is increasing. Tendon healing and modelling are frequently protracted, often leading to pain and impaired function so called overuse syndromes. Presumably, the sensory nervous system may contribute both to promotion of repair as well as to inhibition of healing and tissue modeling. READ MORE
