  1. 1. Compositional clues to sources and sinks of terrestrial organic matter transported to the Eurasian Arctic shelf

    Author : Emma Karlsson; Örjan Gustafsson; Volker Brüchert; Thorsten Dittmar; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic carbon; degradation; microcosm; incubation; terrestrial biomarkers; acyl lipids; lignin phenols; radiocarbon; Eurasian Arctic shelf; East Siberian Sea; Laptev Sea; Lena River; colloidal matter; particulate matter; sedimentary matter; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The amount of organic carbon (OC) present in Siberian Arctic permafrost soils is estimated at twice the amount of carbon currently in the atmosphere. The shelf seas of the Arctic Ocean receive large amounts of this terrestrial OC from Eurasian Arctic rivers and from coastal erosion. READ MORE

  2. 2. Analysis of tracer molecules from organic aerosols - Application of liquid phase microextraction to aerosol analysis

    Author : Murtaza Hyder; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Liquid membrane extraction; Secondary organic aerosols; Enrichment; Tracers; Hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction; Biomass burning; Organic carbon;

    Abstract : Airborne particulate matter is well known because of its adverse impacts on human health and its role in climate processes. In order to understand completely the role of aerosols in atmosphere, their chemical composition is of basic importance. READ MORE

  3. 3. Chlorinated organic pollutants in soil and groundwater at chlorophenol-contaminated sawmill sites

    Author : Ylva Persson; Mats Tysklind; Lars Öberg; Staffan Lundstedt; Jaana Koistinen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; contaminated soil; hydrophobic organic contaminant; chlorinated phenoxyphenol; chlorinated diphenyl ether; chlorinated dibenzofuran; chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin; preservation; mobility; colloid; dissolved organic matter; particulate organic matter; groundwater; equilibrium column test; chlorophenol; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Mixtures of chlorinated organic pollutants can be found in the soils at chlorophenol-contaminated sawmill, including (inter alia) polychlorinated phenols (CPs), phenoxyphenols (PCPPs), diphenyl ethers (PCDEs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxins (PCDDs). These hydrophobic compounds have low water solubility and hence low mobility as truly dissolved compounds. READ MORE

  4. 4. Export and sources of organic carbon in the Lena River basin, Northeastern Siberia

    Author : Liselott Kutscher; Carl-Magnus Mörth; Per Andersson; Don Porcelli; Peter Raymond; Sebastian Sobek; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic carbon; DOC; POC; organic matter; NOM; DOM; POM; Lena River; organsikt kol; DOC; POC; organiskt material; NOM; DOM; POM; Lenafloden; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Permafrost areas are considered to be one of the largest terrestrial storages of carbon. In a warming climate these areas are expected to experience changes in carbon transport to rivers and the oceans due to permafrost thawing, which could enhance erosion, change water flow pathways and increase greenhouse gas emissions. 5. 5. Molecular and isotopic characterization of terrestrial organic carbon released to (sub-)Arctic coastal waters

    Author : Jorien Elisabeth Vonk; Örjan Gustafsson; Jason Neff; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : organic carbon; terrestrial biomarkers; radiocarbon; particulate organic carbon; sediments; sphagnum; Arctic; Bothnian Bay; East Siberian Sea; Kalix River; Kolyma River; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Arctic soils store half of the global soil organic carbon (OC) pool and twice as much C as is currently present in the atmosphere. A considerable part of these carbon pools are stored in permafrost. READ MORE
