  1. 1. Long-term outcome after cataract surgery : a longitudinal study

    Author : Britta Lundqvist; Eva Mönestam; Ulf Stenevi; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cataract; cataract surgery outcome; longitudinal study; subjective visual acuity; Ophtalmiatrics; Oftalmiatrik; Ophtalmology; oftalmiatrik;

    Abstract : Background Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure carried out in the developed world and surgery volumes have increased considerably during the last decades. Various aspects of the surgical procedure, including surgical incision size and intraocular lens materials, have changed substantially, improving the safety and the quality of the outcome. READ MORE

  2. 2. Quality and complications after cataract surgery

    Author : Margrethe Rønbeck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Research about IOL parameters` influence on posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and lens glistenings may be rapidly applied in clinical practice and may help the industry to manufacture intraocular lenses (IOLs) with higher quality, which will be of benefit to the patients. In paper I we compared the influence on PCO of 3 different IOLs; a sharp-edged hydrophobic acrylic, a round-edged silicone and a round-edged heparin-surface-modified polymethylmethacrylate (HSM-PMMA) IOL in a 5 year randomized prospective study with 180 patients. 3. 3. Cataract surgery : complications and techniques

    Author : Anthony Chang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed worldwide. Posterior capsul opacification (PCO) remains the most common postoperative complication that can deteriorate vision. READ MORE

  4. 4. Posterior capsule opacification : An experimental study in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Niklas Wallentin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; Posterior capsule opacification PCO ; after-cataract; lens epithelial cell; proliferation; aqueous humor AqH ; inflammation; growth factors; basic fibroblast growth factor bFGF ; transforming growth factor-β TGF-β ; extracapsular cataract extraction; corneal incision; rabbit; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : The clinical and economic significance of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) makes it an important public health problem. A better understanding of the pathogenesis in order to reduce/prevent PCO is needed. For this purpose an experimental model in the rabbit was used and further developed in thisthesis. READ MORE

  5. 5. On the necessity of screening and national registration of congenital cataracts

    Author : Gunilla Magnusson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : congenital cataract; glaucoma; intraocular surgery; posterior capsular opacification PCO ; prevalence; visual acuity VA ; visual impairment; screening; newborn examination; blindness prevention; cost-utility analysis; quality- adjusted life year QALY ;

    Abstract : Objectives: The overall aim of this thesis was to contribute to improvements in the management of congenital cataract by defining the most efficient screening procedure, examining the magnitude of the morbidity rate, optimizing the timing of surgery by relating surgical outcome to age at intervention and severity of visual deprivation and furthermore by evaluating costs versus consequences of introducing the most efficient screening procedure found, on a national basis.Methods: Paper I: 72 children born between 1992 and 1998 in the Stockholm County Council region, Västra Götaland and Halland county, Linköping-Motala, Malmö, and Lund, who had surgery for congenital cataract before the age of one year were included in a retrospective study.
