  1. 1. Peptide Conjugates as Useful Molecular Tools

    Author : Adam T. Ślósarczyk; Lars Baltzer; Knud J. Jensen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peptide conjugates; designed peptides; polypeptides; molecular recognition; linker; linking technology; bioconjugation; conjugation; conjugates; Kemi; Chemistry; Chemistry with specialization in Bioorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : The conjugation of a small organic molecule to synthetic polypeptides from a designed set has been shown to give rise to binders with high affinity and selectivity for the phosphorylated model proteins α-casein and β-casein but not for ovoalbumin. The small organic molecule that was used for this purpose is comprised of two di-(2-picolyl)amine groups assembled on a dimethylphenyl scaffold, and is capable of complexing two Zn2+ ions to form chelates that bind the phosphate ion. 2. 2. Hsp70 in immunotherapy : a potential vector in cancer and viral vaccines

    Author : Anne-Marie T Ciupitu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : heat shock protein 70; vaccination; tumour antigens; in vivo protection; T cell activation; adjuvant; LCMV;

    Abstract : New efficient vaccines against cancers and infectious diseases are in demand. In 1993 heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) purified from tumour was shown to elicit tumour protection in mice. It was also shown that the protection was not mediated by the hsp70 itself, but by tumour-specific peptides bound to the molecule. READ MORE

  3. 3. Meticulous control of the T3SS of Yersinia is essential for full virulence

    Author : Ann-Catrin Björnfot; Hans Wolf-Watz; Kelly T. Hughes; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Yersinia; type III secretion; YscU; substrate specificity switch; heat shock proteins; VagH; methyltransferase; virulence; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The type III secretion system (T3SS) of pathogenic Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is involved in virulence. The syringe-like secretion system spans both bacterial membranes and is responsible for the ability of Yersinia to transfer toxic proteins (Yop proteins) into the eukaryotic target cell. READ MORE

  4. 4. Novel RelA-SpoT Homolog toxin-antitoxin systems that inhibit bacterial growth through production of toxic alarmone ppApp

    Author : Steffi Jimmy; Vasili Hauryliuk; Vicky Shingler; Michael T. Laub; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; p ppGpp; ppApp; toxin; antitoxin; alarmone; antibacterials; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The stress alarmone nucleotides guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) and tetraphosphate (ppGpp), collectively known as (p)ppGpp, are the molecular mediators of the bacterial stringent response — a bacterial stress response implicated in virulence, antibiotic tolerance and biofilm formation. At high concentrations, (p)ppGpp halts bacterial growth, inhibits protein synthesis and rewires transcription and metabolism. READ MORE

  5. 5. Adoptive T Cell Therapy of Viral Infection and Cancer : Ex vivo Expansion of Cytomegalovirus- and Prostate Antigen-specific T Cells

    Author : Björn Carlsson; Magnus Essand; Thomas Tötterman; Malcolm Brenner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; Immunotherapy; Adoptive T cell therapy; Dendritic cell; T cell; Tetramer; Cytomegalovirus; Transplantation; pp65; Prostate cancer; TARP; Prostate antigens; Immunologi; Immunology; Immunologi;

    Abstract : The main focus of my thesis has been to develop protocols for generating antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and T helper cells (TH) for adoptive transfer to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease and prostate cancer. CMV viremia is a severe complication in immunocompromised stem cell transplanted patients. READ MORE
