1. Exciton coupling and energy transfer in perylene-based systems
Abstract : Understanding the nature of photoinduced processes in organic molecules is essential for the design and synthesis of compounds with desired photochemical properties. This dissertation aims for gaining knowledge and mechanistic understanding of energy transfer in perylene-based systems. READ MORE

2. Computational Investigation of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
Abstract : Interfaces between semiconductors and adsorbed molecules form a central area of research in surface science, occurring in many different contexts. One such application is the so-called Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) where the nanostructured dye-semiconductor interface is of special interest, as this is where the most important ultrafast electron transfer process takes place. 3. Characterisation of Organic Dyes for Solid State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
Abstract : Energy from the sun can be converted to low cost electricity using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Dye molecules adsorbed to the surface of mesoporous TiO2 absorb light and inject electrons into the semiconductor. READ MORE

4. Quantum Chemical Modeling of Dye-Sensitized Titanium Dioxide : Ruthenium Polypyridyl and Perylene Dyes, TiO2 Nanoparticles, and Their Interfaces
Abstract : Quantum chemical calculations have been used to model dye-sensitized nanostructured titanium dioxide systems that can be used in solar cells for solar energy to electricity conversion. Structural, electronic and spectral properties of isolated dyes and both bare and dye-sensitized TiO2 have been calculated with density functional theory, providing detailed information about both the separate parts and the dye-TiO2 interface. 5. Development of Mild Methods for Selective Covalent Functionalization of Graphene
Abstract : This thesis discusses methods for the comparatively mild covalent functionalization of graphene. Several graphene models were investigated: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-graphene on SiO2/Si substrate, graphite foil, graphite flakes, kish graphite and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite.
