    Abstract : An elevated level of Arsenic (As) in aquifers from India and Bangladesh affecting the human health has been widely reported since the late 1980s. The thesis aim is to investigate the present status of As contamination and biogeochemical cycling with direct role of diverse indigenous bacterial communities in As cycling in the Bengal Delta Plain (BDP) aquifers in Nadia district, West Bengal (India). 2. 2. Organic micropollutants in highway stormwater and the role of a gross pollutant trap-biofilter stormwater treatment train

    Author : Ali Beryani; Godecke-Tobias Blecken; Maria Viklander; Katharina Tondera; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering; Centrumbildning - Centrum för dagvattenhantering DRIZZLE ; Centre - Centre for Stormwater Management DRIZZLE ;

    Abstract : The studies which this thesis is based on assessed the stormwater quality in a highway catchment located in Sundsvall, Sweden, and examined the performance of a gross pollutant trap (GPT)-biofilter stormwater treatment train (TT) downstream of the catchment, in terms of removal efficiency, intra-event variability, and environmental risk reduction of organic micropollutants (OMPs) for the receiving water body. Assessing the occurrence and event mean concentrations (EMCs) of all OMPs in the catchment revealed that bisphenol A (BPA), octylphenol (OP), nonylphenol (NP), five carcinogenic and four non-carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and C16-C40 fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) all potentially pose an environmental risk to freshwater (EMCs >PNEC: predicted non-effect concentration), while alkylphenolethoxylates, six low- molecular weight PAHs, and lighter fractions of PHCs (C10-C16) do not occur at problematic levels. 3. 3. Assessing Sub-Lethal Impacts of Petroleum Compounds on Marine Benthic Systems

    Author : Fredrik Lindgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; subletala effekter; mikrobiellt samhälle; meiofauna; petroleum; PAH; bildanalys;

    Abstract : Petroleum and its different distillates commonly end up in the marine environment. One source of these additions is discharges originating from shipping activities; accidents, ship wrecks, operational spills etc. READ MORE

  4. 4. Biodegradation of hydrocarbons in soil and water

    Author : Mikael Eriksson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Solid Phase Microextraction; SPME; biodegradation; bioremediation; bioavailability; monitoring; Volatile Organic Compounds VOC ; Screening; headspace sampling; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; PAHs; aliphatic hydrocarbons; total petroleum hydrocarb;

    Abstract : Biodegradation of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatichydrocarbons was studied in soil and liquid cultures attemperatures ranging from -5 º C to 20 º C undervarious aerobic or anaerobic, nitrate reducing, conditions. Twocontaminated soils were used in the studies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Enhancement and Characterization of Films for Barrier and Release Applications

    Author : Maria Petersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; release; edible materials; petroleum wax; starch; acetoglyceride; microstructure; water vapour permeability; phase separation; protein;

    Abstract : Films and coatings can improve the quality and shelf-life of food products by acting as barriers to e.g. water vapour and oxygen. Many edible biopolymer films, based on polysaccharides and proteins, form excellent oxygen barriers but most often provide only poor water vapour barriers. READ MORE
