  1. 1. Characterisation of social behaviour in red junglefowl and White leghorn laying hens : phenotypic and genetic studies

    Author : Johanna Väisänen; Harry Blokhuis; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Red junglefowl; social behaviour; behaviour tests; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis was, by using two model strains of chicken, red junglefowl and White Leghorn layer, to study differences in social behaviour of the species that could be derived from domestication and production related selection processes. The social phenotype characterisation was done to be able to further study the association of the social differences to specific production related traits as well as to certain genome areas in intercross and backcross lines generated from these two parental populations. 2. 2. Genotypic and phenotypic characterisation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae

    Author : Magnus Unemo; Bengt Wretlind; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the gonococcus) is the aetiological agent of gonorrhoea, which remains a major sexually transmitted infection/disease (STI/STD) worldwide. The incidence of gonorrhoea was previously high in many countries, Sweden included. The incidence in Sweden culminated in 1970 with 487 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. READ MORE

  3. 3. A thermostable alkaline protease from a new alkaliphilic Nesterenkonia sp

    Author : Shahrzad Bakhtiar; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; substrate specificity; crystallization; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; DNA-DNA hybridisation; 16S rDNA analysis; phenotypic characterisation; circular dichroism; differential scanning calorimetry; Nesterenkonia abyssinica; stability; calcium-independent; alkaline protease; alkaliphilic;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns a novel alkaline protease produced by an extremophilic microbial specie, designated as AL20, isolated from a feather sample collected at the shore of the alkaline soda lake Abjata in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. The isolate is a heterotrophic, alkaliphilic, halotolerant gram-positive, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore forming bacterium. READ MORE

  4. 4. Genotypic and phenotypic characterisation of Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from prosthetic joint infections

    Author : Bengt Hellmark; Bo Söderquist; Magnus Unemo; Åsa Nilsdotter; Tor Monsén; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : Staphylococcus epidermidis; prosthetic joint infections; antibiotic susceptibility; virulence factors; epidemiology; MLST; agr; SCCmec; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Staphylococcus epidermidis has emerged in recent years as an important nosocomial pathogen, especially in infections associated with implanted foreign body materials (e.g., prosthetic joints and heart valves) and in individuals with a compromised immune system (e.g. READ MORE

  5. 5. Characterisation of autophagy pathways in atherosclerosis

    Author : Peter Saliba Gustafsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of large to intermediate-sized arteries, characterised by retention of modified low-density lipoprotein within the vessel wall; this evokes an inflammatory response. Low-density lipoprotein carries lipids such as fatty acids, triglycerides and cholesterol, from the liver to peripheral tissues. READ MORE
