    Abstract : This thesis addresses solitary waves and their significance for auroral particle acceleration, coronal heating and incoherent scatter radar spectra. Solitary waves are formed due to a balance of nonlinear and dispersive effects. READ MORE

  2. 2. FPGA-based Instrumentation for Advanced Physics Experiments

    Author : Attila Hidvégi; Samuel Silverstein; Martin Grossmann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Instrumentation; Data acquisition; clock distribution; trigger; FPGA; PCB; LHC; ATLAS; XFEL; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Modern physical experiments often demand advanced instrumentation based on advances in  technology. This work describes four instrumentation physics projects that are based on modern, high-capacity Field-Programmable Gate Arrays, making use of their versatility, programmability, high bandwidth communication interfaces and signal processing capabilities. 3. 3. Predictions of Effective Models in Neutrino Physics

    Author : Johannes Bergström; Tommy Ohlsson; Rikard Enberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neutrino mass; lepton mixing; Majorana neutrinos; effective field theory; Weinberg operator; seesaw models; low-scale seesaw models; inverse seesaw; right-handed neutrinos; renormalization group; threshold effects; neutrinoless double beta decay; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik;

    Abstract : Experiments on neutrino oscillations have confirmed that neutrinos have small, but non-zero masses, and that the interacting neutrino states do not have definite masses, but are mixtures of such states.The seesaw models make up a group of popular models describing the small neutrino masses and the corresponding mixing. 4. 4. Solving the quantum scattering problem for systems of two and three charged particles

    Author : Mikhail Volkov; Nils Elander; William McCurdy; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scattering theory; three body scattering; Atomic and molecular physics; Atom- och molekylfysik; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : A rigorous formalism for solving the Coulomb scattering problem is presented in this thesis. The approach is based on splitting the interaction potential into a finite-range part and a long-range tail part. In this representation the scattering problem can be reformulated to one which is suitable for applying exterior complex scaling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Measurements of Angular Correlations in Minimum Bias Events and Preparatory Studies for Charged Higgs Boson Searches at the Tevatron and the LHC

    Author : Camille Bélanger-Champagne; Claus Buszello; Tord Ekelöf; Nick van Remortel; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Studies of minimum bias events at colliders probe the behavior of QCD in the non-perturbative regime. The phenomenology of events in this regime is described by empirical models that take many parameters, which all need to be tuned to the observed data. READ MORE
