1. Studies on Polarised Light Spectroscopy
Abstract : This thesis project focuses on measurements of dermal microcirculation during vascular provocations with polarised light spectroscopy. This is done with a non-invasive method commercially available as Tissue viability imaging (TiVi) which measures concentration and oxygenation of red blood cells in the papillary dermis. READ MORE

2. Celestial Orientation in Dim Light
Abstract : The polarization pattern of skylight offers many animals a reference for visual compass orientation. In those cases when this optical compass is identified, the receptors involved are often confined to a small part of an eye built predominantly for other visual tasks. READ MORE

3. PoGOLite : The Polarised Gamma-ray Observer
Abstract : PoGOLite is a balloon-borne experiment which will study polarised soft gamma-ray emission from astrophysical targets in the 25 keV – 80 keV energy range by applying well-type phoswich detector technology. Polarised gamma-rays are expected from a wide variety of sources including rotation-powered pulsars, accreting black holes and neutron stars, and jet-dominated active galaxies. READ MORE

4. Ultrastructural Aspects of Pulp Fibers as Studied by Dynamic FT-IR Spectroscopy
Abstract : Dynamic (or 2D) FT-IR spectroscopy in combination withpolarized IR irradiation has been used in this work to studywood polymer orientation and interactions on theultrastructural level in wood fibers in the native state aswell as the effects of different pulping processes. The woodpolymer interactions were studied under both dry and humidconditions. READ MORE

5. Keep it rolling : Straight-line orientation in South African ball-rolling dung beetles
Abstract : Representing a substantial range and variety in morphological and ecological niche, found on all continents of the globe (except for the Antarctic), the ball-rolling dung beetles provide an excellent model in which to study the heading direction network and the factors by which it is influenced. As soon as a ball-rolling dung beetle has located a fresh dung pile to feed on, it immediately starts shaping a piece of dung into a ball, rolling it away from the dung pat in as straight of a trajectory as the terrain allows.
