  1. 1. Nitrogen removal in treatment wetlands : Factors influencing spatial and temporal variations

    Author : Sofia Kallner Bastviken; Karin Sundblad-Tonderski; Jos Verhoeven; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wetlands; denitrification; macrophytes; nitrogen; nitrification; model; treatment wetlands; potential denitrification; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Decreasing the nitrogen transport from land to surrounding seas is a major task throughout the world to limit eutrophication of the coastal areas. Several approaches are currently used, including the establishment of wetlands, to decrease the transport of nitrogen. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hierarchical responses to organic contaminants in aquatic ecotoxicological bioassays: from microcystins to biodegradation

    Author : Katia Montenegro; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; grazing efficiency; potential trade-off; glyphosate mineralization; DDE; potential denitrification; microcystin production; potential nitrification; DDE biodegradation; water stable isotopes; groundwater apparent age; fenthion; Chlorophyta; Daphnia pulex; diversity productivity relationship; glyphosate;

    Abstract : In this thesis I explore the ecotoxicological responses of aquatic organisms at different hierarchical levels to organic contaminants by means of bioassays. The bioassays use novel endpoints or approaches to elucidate the effects of exposure to contaminants and attempt to give mechanistic explanations that could be used to interpret effects at higher hierarchical scales. 3. 3. Structural and biochemical analysis of two copper proteins - plastocyanin from spinach and nitrite reductase from Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.3

    Author : Frida Jacobson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plastocyanin; X-ray crystallography; nitrite reductase; copper geometry; redox; copper protein; photosynthesis; reduction potential; denitrification; electron transfer;

    Abstract : Plastocyanin from spinach and nitrite reductase from Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.3 are two copper-containing proteins that are involved in biological electron transport chains: plastocyanin operates in photosynthesis and nitrite reductase takes part in the denitrification pathway. 4. 4. Degradation of organic matter in wastewater -Enhanced denitrification and removal of refractory organics

    Author : Marinette Hagman; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; leachate; denitrification; carbon source; advanced oxidation; Activated sludge; wastewater; oxygen uptake rate; ozone;

    Abstract : Degradation of organic matter takes place in many processes within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The need for optimisations and extended degradation processes for both organics and nitrogen will increase as outlet demands are strengthened and increasing loads are desired. READ MORE

  5. 5. Risk of nitrous oxide emissions and potential of bioaugmentation when treating digester supernatant via nitrification-denitrification

    Author : Fredrik Stenström; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : Bioaugmentation; Digester supernatant; Inoculation; Nitrification-denitrification; Nitrifiers; Nitrous oxide emissions; Reject water; Bioaugmentation; Digester supernatant; Inoculation; Nitrification-denitrification; Nitrifiers; Nitrous oxide emissions; Reject water;

    Abstract : This thesis examines two different impacts of sidestream treatment of digester supernatant via nitrification-denitrification in a sequenced batch reactor (SBR). One of the impacts is the detrimental formation of nitrous oxide, and the other is the positive boosting of nitrifiers to the mainstream process through bioaugmentation. READ MORE
