  1. 1. Hepatitis B virus infection and genomic changes from a long-term perspective

    Author : Jonas Bläckberg; Sektion III; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Infektioner; Infections; cor promoter; precore; occult infection; HBV; mutation;

    Abstract : Hepatitis B virus is a non-cytopathic virus with a small, circular, partially double-stranded DNA of 3.2 kb. It causes acute and chronic inflammatory liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Retesting of stored sera from an outbreak of acute hepatitis in 1969-72 allowed identification of 126 cases of acute hepatitis B. READ MORE

  2. 2. The hepatitis B virus – Insights into genetic variability, evolution and Bayesian phylogeographic inference

    Author : Mikael Ingman; Malmö Klinisk virologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hepatit B; evolutionsbiologi; fylogeni; Hepatitis B; evolutionary dynamics; Phylogeography;

    Abstract : In terms of genome size, the hepatitis B virus is the smallest virus known to infect humans and its compactness with multiple overlapping reading frames puts restraints on the emergence of mutations. In the papers included in this thesis we aimed to investigate genetic variation within the precore and core promoter region and to describe the origin, spread and diversification of HBV genotype A. 3. 3. Viral and host determinants in hepatitis B

    Author : Hossein Sendi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The outcome of hepatitis B infection is highly variable, ranging from acute disease resulting in the elimination of infection to persistent infection that can lead to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. The factors determining the outcome in an individual are not fully known but may be classified into viral and host factors. READ MORE

  4. 4. Geographic and genetic diversity of hepatitis B

    Author : Erik Alestig; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hepatitis B virus; genotype; phylogeny; molecular epidemiology; sequence analysis; mutation;

    Abstract : Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection is a global health problem and may lead to chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer. The ability of HBV to adapt to the host environment by genetic variation has lead to the evolution of 8 established (A-H) and 2 putative genotypes (I-J), each corresponding to a rather well-defined geographical distribution. 5. 5. Chronic hepatitis B in children

    Author : Ann Söderström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Chronic hepatitis B affects more than 350 million people. In areas of high and intermediate endemicity, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is mainly contracted in the perinatal period or early childhood, and many of them become chronic carriers. READ MORE
