  1. 1. Predator psychology and mimicry evolution - a theoretical analysis

    Author : Alexandra Balogh; Olof Leimar; Michael Speed; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Müllerian mimicry; two-step evolution; gradual evolution; mutualism; predator psychology; Ethology and behavioural ecology; Etologi och beteendeekologi; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : The evolution of Müllerian mimicry depends on many factors, among which predator psychology is the most important one. Predator avoidance learning, generalization and discrimination are primary selective agents during the evolutionary process. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cycles of voles, predators, and alternative prey in boreal Sweden

    Author : Birger Hörnfeldt; S. Erlinge; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3-4 year cycles; Clethrionomys glareolus; Clethrionomys rufocanus; Microtus agrestis; snap-trapping; rate of change; population regulation; delayed density-dependence; time-lag mechanism; seasonality; predation; food; predator avoidance; foraging behaviour; Aegolius funereus; nest boxes; numerical response; nomadism; Vulpes vulpes; Sarcoptes scabiei vulpes; Lepus timidus; Francisella tularensis; Tetraonidae; hunting statistics; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Bank voles, grey-sided voles, and field voles had synchronous 3-4 year density cycles with variable amplitudes which averaged about 200-fold in each species. Cycles of vole predators (red fox and Tengmalm's owl), and their (foxes') alternative prey (mountain hare and forest grouse) lagged behind the vole cycles. READ MORE

  3. 3. Local adaptive pigmentation in Asellus aquaticus -effects of UV-radiation and predation regime

    Author : Jonas Johansson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; damselfly; perch; UV-avoidance; isopod; anti-predator traits; evolution; selective predation; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : Pigmentation in the freshwater isopod Asellus aquaticus differed between two habitats. Asellus were lighter pigmented in stands of submerged stonewort vegetation, than in nearby reed stands. Moreover, Asellus pigmentation became lighter with time in recently established stonewort stands. READ MORE

  4. 4. To move or not to move? Zooplankton strategies for food encounter and predator avoidance

  5. 5. Colour patterns in warning displays

    Author : Marianne Aronsson; Gabriella Gamberale-Stille; Olof Leimar; Candy Rowe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aposematism; warning colouration; colour patterns; avoidance learning; generalization behaviour; signal design; signal evolution; conspicuousness; mimicry; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : In aposematism a prey species use bright colours, often combined with a black contrasting pattern, to signal unprofitability as prey to potential predators. Although there are several different hypotheses about the presence of these internally contrasting patterns, there is little experimental evidence of any beneficial effects. READ MORE
