  1. 1. How can older adults combat diabetes to achieve a longer and healthier life?

    Author : Ying Shang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Prediabetes;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (hereafter, diabetes) and prediabetes are very common in older adults and constitute a great health concern for this population. The objective of this project is to investigate the impact of prediabetes and diabetes on health and survival among older adults, and to identify modifiable factors that may attenuate the risk of diabetes on disability and mortality to prolong survival with independence. 2. 2. The impact of diabetes on cognitive aging and dementia

    Author : Anna Marseglia; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : prediabetes;

    Abstract : The impact of prediabetes and diabetes on different stages of cognitive function during aging remains unclear. This thesis aimed to investigate the impact of prediabetes and of diabetes on cognitive aging—from cognitive deficits, through cognitive decline, to dementia—, explore underlying cerebral mechanisms and identify factors that may protect older adults with diabetes from dementia. 3. 3. Pharmacometrics Modelling in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : Implications on Study Design and Diabetes Disease Progression

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacometric; type 2 diabetes mellitus; impaired glucose tolerance; prediabetes; anti-diabetes drug development; insulin; glucose; natural diabetes disease progression; lifestyle intervention; short-term provocation; long-term effect; glucose homeostasis; glucose and insulin regulation; weight; dropout; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Endocrinology and Diabetology;

    Abstract : Pharmacometric modelling is widely used in many aspects related to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), for instance in the anti-diabetes drug development, and in quantifying the disease progression of T2DM.The aim of this thesis were to improve the design of early phase anti-diabetes drug development studies with the focus on the power to identify mechanism of drug action (MoA), and to characterize and quantify the progression from prediabetes to overt diabetes, both the natural progression and the progression with diet and exercise interventions, using pharmacometrics modelling. 4. 4. Optimizing Exposome-wide Assessments in Cardiometabolic Risk

    Author : Hugo Pomares-Millan; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lifestyle; Nutritional epidemiology; Cardiometabolic risk; Prediabetes; cardiovascular disease CVD ; Type 2 diabetes T2D ; Machine learning; causal inference; Mediation analysis; Mendelian randomization;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), two concomitant conditions that appear with growing concern. In our work, we aim to improve the identification of individuals at-risk of cardiometabolic disease through the characterization of complex environmental exposures (i.e. READ MORE

  5. 5. Metabolic and endocrine effects of SGLT2 inhibition

    Author : Per Lundkvist; Jan Eriksson; Lars Lind; Maria J Pereira; Michael Alvarsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SGLT2 inhibition; GLP-1 receptor agonism; DPP4 inhibition; NAFLD; prediabetes; type 2 diabetes; obesity; metabolic syndrome; glucagon.; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are two growing global health problems with similar comorbidity profiles. SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) improve blood glucose control and can relieve both T2D and obesity, as well as their associated health problems such as hypertension, kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease.
