  1. 1. Protein Prenylation in Higher Eukaryotes

    Author : Ingela Parmryd; Patrick J Casey; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Protein prenylation is a post-translational process where proteins become covalently modified by an isoprenoid group. This modification adds hydrophobicity to the proteins. For all prenylated proteins identified to date, the prenyl group is an absolute requirement for their biological functions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Protein modification with hydrophobic prenyl groups in malignant cells

    Author : Magnus Hjertman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Mevalonate (MVA) is the key intermediate in the isoprene synthetic pathway leading to the formation of a number of biologically important lipid molecules. It is well known that inhibition of MVA synthesis blocks the cell cycle progression of mammalian cells, a fact suggesting that some isoprenoids derived from MVA are required for cell proliferation. 3. 3. Statins, Lipids, and Mutations: Consequences for the Heart and Immune System

    Author : Emil G. Ivarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CAAX Proteins; Statins; RHO Proteins; Dilated Cardiomyopathy;

    Abstract : CAAX proteins are a group of proteins that undergo a three-step protein maturation process that renders the proteins carboxyl-terminus hydrophobic and prone to localize to cellular membranes, where they have their primary function. The first step in this process is called prenylation, which is the covalent attachment of a lipid, either a 15-carbon farnesyl or a 20-carbon geranylgeranyl lipid, to the carboxyl-terminal cysteine residue by the enzymes farnesyltransferase (FTase) and geranylgeranyltransferase type I (GGTase-I), respectively. 4. 4. Defining the importance of protein geranylgeranylation in innate immunity

    Author : Murali K Akula; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CAAX proteins; GGTase-I; RAC1; statins;

    Abstract : RHO family proteins and other intracellular proteins are prenylated with a 20-carbon lipid—a product of the cholesterol synthesis pathway—by protein geranylgeranyltransferase type I (GGTase-I). Prenylation is widely believed to target proteins to membranes where they encounter effector molecules that stimulate GTP-binding and activation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Progesterone receptor-mediated effects on apoptosis in periovulatory granulosa cells

    Author : Emilia Rung; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The most common fate of developing ovarian follicles is demise due to a process known as atresia. Regulation of atresia is dependent on the developmental stage of the follicles, resulting in a continuous reduction of the number of follicles as they differentiate and grow towards ovulation.
