  1. 1. The Role of Sugars for Protein Stabilization

    Author : Christoffer Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein; water; QENS; biomolecule; EPSR; amorphous; trehalose; neutron scattering; cryopreservation; DSC; neutron diffraction; dielectric spectroscopy;

    Abstract : The understanding of biomolecular interactions with water and co-solutes can lead to greater knowledge regarding the mechanisms behind biomolecular stabilization. This is highly important for developing technologies aimed to preserve biological materials. READ MORE

  2. 2. Material Properties of Cereal Protein Films

    Author : Thomas Gillgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; plasticization; avenin; prolamin; kafirin; mechanical properties; water vapour permeability; oxygen permeability; protein; film; glass transition temperature; zein;

    Abstract : Materials that are renewable and biodegradable are demanded due to environmental aspects. Biopolymeric materials, such as materials from prolamins, fulfil both of these requirements. Prolamins are cereal storage proteins. Examples of such are zein, gluten, kafirin and avenin from maize, wheat, sorghum and oats, respectively. READ MORE

  3. 3. Theoretical Reflections of Solvation in Polar Media

    Author : Daniel Hagberg; Beräkningskemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; kvantkemi; Teoretisk kemi; quantum chemistry; Theoretical chemistry; Coordination; Water; Uranyl; Intermolecular forces; Simulation; Dielectric; Cluster; Hofmeister series; Ion; Interaction; Dipole;

    Abstract : Using experiments it is rather easy to measure things on the macroscopic length scale, while it is much harder to measure something in the microscopic world like molecular structure. The opposite is true in theoretical chemistry. READ MORE

  4. 4. Material Properties of Starch and Cereal Protein Films and Foams

    Author : Thomas Gillgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; foam; avenin; oxygen permeability; amylopectin; water vapour permeability; plasticization; mechanical properties; zein; film; glass transition temperature; kafirin; prolamin; cereal protein; amylose; starch;

    Abstract : Materials that are renewable and biodegradable are demanded for environmental reasons. Biopolymeric materials, such as materials from starch and cereal proteins, are both renewable and biodegradable. However, starch and cereal protein materials are generally rather brittle and therefore need to be plasticized to become more flexible. READ MORE

  5. 5. Statistical Mechanical Studies of Aqueous solutions and Biomolecular Systems

    Author : Fernando Luis Barroso Da Silva; Beräkningskemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; highly charged macromolecules; dielectric discontinuity; dissociation constant; Tanford-Kirkwood model; protein mutation; electrostatic interactions; chemical potential; titration; biomolecules; computer simulations; radial distribution function; electrolyte solutions; continuum model.; Theoretical chemistry; quantum chemistry; Teoretisk kemi; kvantkemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with theoretical studies of aqueous solutions and biomolecular systems. Part of the present work is to understand equilibrium solvent and solute properties, while the other part is to study processes that occur in these solutions. READ MORE
