  1. 1. Pulmonary hypertension. Clinical and pathophysiological studies

    Author : Nedim Selimovic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Pulmonary hypertension; Echocardiography; Right heart catheterisation; Pulmonary vascular resistance; Pulmonary function tests; Lung transplantation; Mortality on the waiting list; Vascular remodelling; Growth substances; Inflammation; Endothelin;

    Abstract : Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common abnormality, most often associated with various cardiopulmonary diseases. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a devastating pulmonary vascular disease characterised by the proliferation of endothelial, smooth-muscle cells and fibroblasts. READ MORE

  2. 2. Pulmonary Injury Following Intestinal Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

    Author : Anna Börjesson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reperfusion injury; intestinal ischemia; pulmonary injury; endothelium; cytokines; alveolar fluid clearance; leukocytes; orthopaedics; Surgery; traumatology; ortopedi; Kirurgi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is a potentially life-threatening condition, sometimes leading to a systemic inflammatory response and the potential development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of intestinal I/R on pulmonary function with special emphasis on removal of excess alveolar fluid, pulmonary endothelial barrier permeability, leukocyte accumulation and function, and possible therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of pulmonary injury following intestinal I/R. 3. 3. Quantification of pulmonary scintigraphy

    Author : Jiahua Xu; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Emphysema; Inhomogeneity; Perfusion; scintigraphy; SPECT; 99mTc-Technegas; Ventilation; V Q;

    Abstract : Modern nuclear medicine techniques, such as SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography), enable quantification and localisation of lung function in small lung elements, but appropriate methods are not yet available. The aim of the present project was therefore to develop and evaluate methods for mapping lung function in planar scintigrams and in SPECT. READ MORE

  4. 4. Solute exhange across the alveolo-capillary barrier

    Author : Kristina Nilsson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tomography; radiology; Clinical physics; pulmonary oedema.; nuclear medicine; smoking; permeability; rabbit; DTPA; Pulmonary surfactants; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study the transfer of solutes across the alveolo-capillary barrier in experimental models of alveolar surfactant dysfunction and lung injury as well as in smokers. Experimental studies were performed in anaesthetized, and mechanically ventilated animals. READ MORE

  5. 5. Applications of Magnetic Tracers in the Human Lung and Gastrointestinal Tract

    Author : Mikael Forsman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; inverse solution; gastrointestinal motility; inhaled particles; gastric emptying; welding dust; MPG; pulmonary clearance; occupational health; magnetopneumography; multipole analysis; transit time;

    Abstract : The use of ferrimagnetic material as a tracer represents a noninvasive approach in physiological measurements. Concerning the lung, magnetopneumography, MPG, is a unique technique to estimate retained dust in the lung, using the magnetizable dust fraction as a tracer. First a strong constant magnetic field is briefly applied to the thorax. READ MORE
