  1. 1. Towards Fully Optimized BICM Transmissions

    Author : Alex Alvarado; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; binary reflected Gray code; iterative decoding; pulse amplitude modulation; convolutional codes; trellis-coded modulation; coded modulation; Bit-interleaved coded modulation; quadrature amplitude modulation; hierarchical constellations; interleaver design;

    Abstract : Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) was introduced in 1992 as a new coded modulation (CM) scheme particularly well suited for fading channels and is nowadays considered the de facto CM scheme in wireless standards (HSPA, IEEE 802.11a/g/n, DVB-T2/S2/C2, etc.). READ MORE

    Abstract : This thesis covers multidimensional modulation formats for coherent optical communication systems including spatial division multiplexed systems using multicore fibers. The single-mode optical signal has four dimensions which are spanned by the two orthogonal polarizations and the in-phase and quadrature components. READ MORE

  3. 3. On Bit-Wise Decoders for Coded Modulation

    Author : Mikhail Ivanov; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bit-error probability; L-values; labeling; Gray code; coded modulation; log-likelihood ratio; maximum likelihood decoder; Additive white Gaussian noise; quadrature amplitude modulation.; interleaver; flat fading channel; pairwise error probability;

    Abstract : Coded modulation is a technique that emerged as a response to the growing demand for high data rates. It was devised to achieve high spectral efficiency with high reliability, potentially approaching Shannon’s capacity. The main idea of coded modulation consists in combining error-correcting coding with higher-order modulation. READ MORE

    Author : Tobias Eriksson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; binary pulse position modulation QPSK; Fiber-optical communication; spectral efficiency; power efficiency; multidimensional position modulation.; 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation 16QAM ; quadrature phase shift keying QPSK ; coherent detection; polarization-switched quadrature phase shift keying PS-QPSK ; 128-level set-partitioning QAM 128-SP-QAM ;

    Abstract : Coherent optical receivers have enabled the use of multilevel modulation formats with high spectral efficiencies and long transmission reaches. Traditionally, modulation formats utilizing the two dimensions spanned by the amplitude and the phase of the signal have been dominating. READ MORE

  5. 5. The alternate-phase return-to-zero modulation format in high-speed optical-fibre communications

    Author : Marco Forzati; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; high-speed optical transmission; return-to-zero; nonlinear optics; dispersion management; phase modulation; modulation formats; Fibre optics communication; fibres;

    Abstract : Increasing the channel bit rate is an efficient way to upgrade traffic capacity in installed transmission links. At bit rates of the order of 40 Gb/s, on-off keying transmission becomes severely impaired by non-linear effects,particularly Intra-channel Cross-Phase Modulation (IXPM) and Intra-channel Four-Wave Mixing (IFWM), which cause pulses in different bit slots to interact with each-other.
