1. Order in Strongly Correlated Quasi-One-Dimensional Systems : Solving Higher-Dimensional Systems Combining Matrix-Product-State Methods and Mean-Field Theory
Abstract : Since their discovery the understanding of unconventional superconductors (USCs) has posed a great challenge in condensed matter physics. One central problem, both of theory and experiment, lies in determining the microscopic origin of electron pairing in such systems. READ MORE

2. Improvement and Assessment of Two-Dimensional Resistivity Models Derived from Radiomagnetotelluric and Direct-Current Resistivity Data
Abstract : Two-dimensional (2-D) models of electrical resistivity are improved by jointly inverting radiomagnetotelluric (RMT) and direct-current resistivity (DCR) data or by allowing for displacement currents in the inversion of RMT data collected on highly resistive bedrock. Uniqueness and stability of the 2-D models are assessed with a model variance and resolution analysis that allows for the non-linearity of the inverse problem. READ MORE

3. Calibration and Reduction of Large-Scale Dynamic Models - Application to Wind Turbine Blades
Abstract : This thesis investigates the validity of structural dynamics models of wind turbine blades. An outlook on methods for model calibration to make models valid for their intended use is presented in the thesis. The intention is to make the models valid for robust predictions. The model validity is here assessed to be of hierarchical dual level. READ MORE

4. Model Based Optimization of a Complete Diesel Engine/SCR System
Abstract : Achieving upcoming emissions legislation (Euro VI) for heavy trucks is a serious challenge for the manufacturers. Apart from the increasingly strict limits on nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate emissions (PM), the limited amount of fossil fuels as well as alarming climate changes simultaneously drives the demand for low CO2 emissions. 5. Selected Topics in Continuum Percolation : Phase Transitions, Cover Times and Random Fractals
Abstract : This thesis consists of an introduction and three research papers. The subject is probability theory and in particular concerns the topics of percolation, cover times and random fractals.Paper I deals with the Poisson Boolean model in locally compact Polish metric spaces. READ MORE
